Worried sick

Hi there

I’m new to this site. I found a lump in my right breast and rang my doctor last Thursday morning. I can’t fault them and I was seen as an emergency within an hour. He checked my breasts said he “thinks” the lump is a cyst and has referred me to the breast clinic to be on the safe side.

I’m absolutely worried sick! They have confirmed that they have my referral and will write to me with my appointment.

Can someone tell me what happens in the breast clinic please. I know I’m having a mammogram but not sure what else.

  • I don't have my bone scan until the 15 th April and have never been offered a ct scan....I'm happy to wait until I'm told...I'll only worry if they do or don't offer one!

I have a basket full of scarves and turbans...I like to ring the changes, you'll need a soft one for bed, I got a slouchy one from Amazon that I pull down over my eyes at night.... also look into cream for hands and feet as they can get sore. I use udderly smooth again from Amazon...

I do get sore light sensitivity eyes, that came up on my 2nd cycle, my skin doesn't look great...and I'm a wee bit fumbly fingers....but will be talking to my onco about that....

just remember we are all different, so don't be fretting over my side effects, just go with the flow and see what happens....

i also belong to another forum...breast cancer care....I'm on the thread for chemo starters in February ( with other ladies going through the same thing) it's been invaluable as this forum is too.....have a look....you could sign up for the April starters....l also look back on other months to see how they're doing and pick up all sorts of tips.....xxxxx

  • Hi marlyn

I think theyre doing the scans to determine if its spread and because ive been so anxious as i lost my mum in february to breast cancer and my mums had spread to her liver, lungs and bones.  Yes i will take a look at that forum, thank you.  Please keep me updated on your treatment.  Take care xxx

  • Hi Marlyn

Really glad you’re getting through chemo.  So nice to hear how you are getting on.

i am buying soft bras on Tuesday.  Stopping work Monday (working has kept me off the emotional rollercoaster at least some of the time).  Should I buy bras in larger size?  I shall be going home with a Redivac (glass jar) drain which I will carry around in a shoulder bag.  Three months ago I was springing around, working 13 hour nursing shifts with very heavy, immobile patients not a care in the world about my health.  Callback on mammogram and now getting all worked up about this operation and drain.  I don’t hear of too many ladies here talking about having complete underarm clearance. I’m also now (yes, I know typical nurse) convinced my asthma cough is really lung cancer.  Just last minute nerves I’m sure.

    Going mad here xxxxxxxx

  • Yes defo get a larger size bra, I'm still wearing mine ( washed of course) from my op on 3 rdJanuary .

There are some ladies on my chemo forum who have had a full node clearance, it's good to compare notes. There are also a couple of nurses there who admit they make the worse patients......too much insider knowledge...

oh god, every ache and pain and twinge I have convinces me the cancer is crawling somewhere else, I really have to reign myself in. I am totally obsessed with my thermometer since chemo began. I was told to do it once a day....well...I always picking the darn thing up! Hubby has threatened to confiscate it..

i know your going mad, but believe it or not once your on road you really do just get on with it...you simply have to surrender yourself ( difficult if your a control freak like me)  you will be fine and so will I xxxxx

  • Thank you so much for that.  Never thought if the thermometer.....,.that’s a heads up for my next madness.  Going to get it right now as convinced I’m getting a cold and they’ll cancel op.

Si glad u asked about bra sizing.

I admit so many elderly ladies who had mastectomies about forty years ago.  They didn’t have the tailor made medications we do but they are just fine.  All they complain about is their arthritis!

Glad to know we’re all having same worries.  We are all going to be all right - especially with our togetherness support.

    xxxxx

  • Sorry for typos - hope it makes sense. Phone so small xxxxxx

    Hi Petrgn,

Yes, I remember now. I am so sorrry, but I reply to so many people, usually in the early hours of the morning. One of my side effects of pain meds is that my memory and concentration have both been affected. As soon as I saw that you are a nurse I remembered.

If you are expecting to have chemo, it can only be a bonus if you don't need it - here's hoping. The lumpectomy is straightforward and, I'm glad to hear that you are no longer so scared thanks to the support that you'e found here.

I see that you are worried about a total node clearance. Have you used the search facility on this forum to find others who have had this too? If you go to the blue banner at the top of this page and click on the search engine, type in 'total node removal' or something similar, and click. This will bring up previous posts on the topic. I am sure that your asthma cough is just that - this is where having a little knowledge is a dangerous thing! Doctors and nurses seldom make good patients for that reason.

I see that Marilyn has been giving you the benefit of her experience. I hope that her positivity rubs off on you. She is going through a lot, but she really is a star.

You don't have long to wait now. I shall be thinking of you on 3rd.

Don't forget to let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you, again, for your support xxxx

  • [@petrgn]‍ will be thinking of you on the 3rd, I'm sure it will all go well. And yes, it will be wonderful to know that the tumour itsefl has now gone and you can start the next stage. I'm also convinced that every small ache I feel is the cancer spreading - it's stressing me more than the actual tumour is (I guess it's the fear of the unknown kicking in again!)

[@Jolamine]‍ thank you for your kind words. Knowing that you've been through this twice is very inspirational, and I really hope you're doing fine now. I did take a friend with me for the diagnosis, although she waited in the waiting room as I'm more likely to get upset if there's someone with me! I do feel calmer now I know what we're dealing with, and I know what the next step is.

[@Marlyn]‍ it's so reassuring to to hear that your surgery was so straightforward! I've never had surgery before, so I'm quite nervous. Plus the hospital is 120 miles away, and although I've got plenty people who will be willing to take me there, it still feels like an added stress. I'm not sure yet if mine is HER2+ or HER2- so should find out after surgery. That's a great tip about the bras and moisturiser, so thanks for that!

Love and best wishes to you all xxx

  • After being told initially at my mammogram that I had a suspected Fibroadenoma , they have just rang me and asked to attend the clinic again on Friday as the biopsy results are saying possible fibromatosis. Now I know nothing about what this is and I’m slightly panicked!  does anyone know what this is? The breast nurse said it’s still benign and the consultant wants to discuss with me having more biopsies or removal of my lump.

Thank you ladies and gents in advance xxx
