Awaiting Diagnosis

Hi, just after some advice/help. Currently going through tests for a very large Ovarian Cyst, which i was told 2 weeks ago when i had an ultrasound there may be a tumor in the mass. I had a letter saying that i had been referred to the MDT team and that there were some very worrying features on my ultrasound. I have a MRI booked in this week, but wondered how long it all takes? im concerned and in some pain. Struggling to sit down or control my bladder/bowels. Its very uncomfertable......

I think its the uncertainty thats concerning me, not really sure what the MDT team is?!

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks :)

  • Hi LisaWilli,

I do wish clinicians wouldn't use acronyms without explaining them. An MDT is just a Multi Disciplinary Team, usually led by a consultant but includes nurses, other doctors, radiologists etc. They will discuss your MRI and ultrasound results, agree a probable diagnosis and then hand your case to whichever clinician is most suitable depending on what treatment they will recommend to you.

This doesn't mean they think you have cancer, it is just the way the NHS operates. It is much more efficient to discuss lots of cases and schedule care interventions in a weekly face to face meeting than to try to organise care for a group of patients using email or phone calls.

If you are in pain, please see your GP or another clinician - don't suffer in silence.

    Best wishes

    Dave
