Swollen Lump in neck

my husband recently had biopsy on lump to the right of his throat. The doctor said he could not say if it was cancer or no. He has told him he should consider a thyroidectomy (for nodule) one of the side effects could be his vocal chords will be damaged rendering him mute. He is already totally deaf in one ear.

Why cant a proper diagnosis be made? What benefit would the operation have should he go ahead with it? I have seen him go totally in on himself depressed does not know how to proceed any ideas experiences gratefully received .

  • Go staight to hospital and bypass GP, they are useless.

My dentist referred me straight to hospital if you want to go that route.

Apparently GP's are notoriois for saying it's an infection / handing out anti-biotics etc

GO STRAIGHT TO THE EXPERT ONCOLOGIST TO BE CHECKED OUT AT YOU NEAREST HOSPITAL ASAP.

  • Hi Hart,

Oh dear you are both left with great doubts.

Has husband had any other test besides inconclusive biopsy ie: ct scan mri scan? Was the biopsy on the nodule or on lymph node?

Doctors have a duty to point out any dangers or pitfalls of surgery,so he has done this by telling him of the vocal cord risk, a worst case scenario.

If it were me I would see GP and ask for a 2nd opinion with another consultant before making any decision  You need more affirmative answers than you seem to have at present.

It is pretty much common for some people to withdraw into themselves, but another reason to speak with GP. As the longer depression goes on the worse it gets.

Wishing you all the best xx
