Pain under arm and in breast

Hi

im 43 yrs old abs for the last 4 weeks I have been experiencing a pain in my left arm pit which had now spread to a pain in my actual breast as well - it feels like sometimes it is going straight through the centre of my nipple/breast and is a sharp stabbing pain. I’ve also noticed pain in my right armpit but not as regular  the pain in my arm pit is like a burning pain and sometimes tingles

I can’t find any lumps in my arm pit or in my breast - I’m very flat chested so I can only feel the muscle/chest wall but both my breasts are really tender and sore - something I’ve never had at all even when I have my period

I’ve been to the gp but he didn’t even examine me and said it could be hormonal or related to a gastric condition that I’m currently having investigated (reflux or gastritis) so was quite dismissive

should I be worried? I feel like as I’m already being seen about my gastric issues that he thought I was being a hypochondriac

the pain in my armpit is worse when I reach out for something or stretch but I don’t think it’s muscular (I rarely exercise or lift anything heavy)

im worries if it’s something serious and should keep pushing to go back and see another GP?

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

Chalotte

  • How did you get on at the clinic? I am experiencing the same issues... pain in left underarm and breast.. go couldn't find any lumps thank god but this pain has been here now for a few months, radiating to my collarbone and shoulder sometimes!

    hope all is well xx

  • Mines the same. Hurts more if I reach out for something or bend down. Had it a few weeks now. Started with a real itchy stinging in the nipple. That went,  then a few weeks later the pain in armpit/breast started. No lumps but tender. I'm 65. Be interested to see how everyone got on. Thanks

  • Wow, I could have written the first post.
I'm 44, pain in left armpit for over 3 month, pain now radiates into my breast. I sometimes feel pain in the right armpit as well. I had blood work which all came back fine so I don't want to pester the Dr during a lockdown so feel I should wait it out.
I did wonder if it was muscular and a massage may help? Or hormonal? It's reassuring to hear others have the same symptoms so do keep the updates coming.

  • Hi there my pain returned a few weeks ago but I am convinced it's hormonal. I do have back problems as standard and had been having monthly physio/massages which have now stopped as she can't come in to my home. But the pain is still there. It's mainly in my armpit and almost behind my arm pit (below shoulder blade) but I can't still find lumps and bumps and I am putting it down to hormones and maybe peri menopausal. I had a mammogram a year ago when this started and found nothing. My GP/nurse was fairly useless a year ago when I asked for a blood test to detect start of menopause as they said I was too young. I  now going private for this which is not right but my GP won't process this at all now ... the nurse won't see me and nor will the GP

    ill keep this thread updated

  • Hi, I'm in a similar situation!

I'm 25 and have had on and off soreness and swelling in my left armpit since summer 2017 now! I rang my doctors about it a few times and said it was affecting my left breast too, she wrote it off as hormonal and/or irritation due to shaving, refused to even check it because of how young I was.

Got a new doctor this year, she got me in on Wednesday after speaking to her over the phone on Tuesday this week, had a feel and instantly said she could feel numerous enlarged lymph nodes in my armpit and my breast, which is worrying because I'm pretty sure I don't get infections every few months! No idea what it could be, i'm worried it's something sinister because it's been slowly getting worse over the past 3 years.

Been referred to the non-symptomatic breast clinic but that'll obviously take forever due to Covid! Still waiting for an endoscopy for acid reflux since August

I'll keep checking back and hopefully everyone gets positive answers soon! I'll update my own situation when I get anywhere.

  • I am in the same boat, although I have had a normal mammogram and shoulder MRI which showed mild enthesopathy.  I am in a lot of pain, especially when my arm is to the side and when I am in bed.  It feels like my whole left arm and breast is "tight"

I have been taking naproxen twice daily but it seems not to be working, I am having physio, which is making the pain worse.  I dont know what to do..... considering a private breast clinic appt, although I have had the normal mammogram.  I am so anxious and it consumes my thoughts every day, all day!

    Any advice greatly received.

  • Hi

I spoke with you a few weeks ago and am sorry that your pain and worry has not gone.

I am still in the same situation with weird sensations down side of left breast and sometimes in arm. I too have seen a private physio but it has not resolved the problem. I have had this for 8 months now . I am also finding it difficult to think of anything else.

My mammogram and ultra sound were also clear, but I am so worried that I think they have missed something. I am not sure either if a private appt would help.

It does all take it's toll and I sympathise with you. X

  • I have still been considering another breast clinic app, but not sure what I'll achieve - will I also doubt that ??

    I hope you're doing ok ?

  • Hi again

    Thanks for reply.

Things much the same for me. Still have strange feeling in my breast etc. Like you I am still wondering if a private appt would help or not!!

I am still having private physio and have been seen by NHS physio which to be honest wasn't very helpful as no diagnosis and only one face to face appt.

I can't believe this has lasted for eight months now and has definitely affected me mentally. I have never suffered with any health anxiety problems before and am sure I am not imaging it.

I hope things get better for you and the pain and worry eases.

  • I feel exactly the same, I think the loss of my mum has made me realise that good health isn't guaranteed.  I'm back to the GP to talk further, she said there's a blood test for nerve damage, as I get numbness in my arm and shoulder too.   Some days it feels better and others it's worse, depending if my mind is occupied,I think.  I've been using ice pack in the evening which seems to be easing the pain.  I think if we weren't in the covid situation, things would be easier also.
physio seems to be making it worse but again, I'm not the professional, so I'll keep going !!

Hoping you have a good Xmas
