Sore throat for a month

Hello everyone,

im 30 year old. It all started as a tonsillitis a month ago with high temperature, chills, sore throat some some red and white little spots on my tonsils. I managed everything at home without going to the doctor . I started to feel better but on and off with sore throat. 2 weeks after I felt like my left ear was blocked and felt pressure on it as well as pain on my left tonsil and blocked nose on the left side. I went to the gp and she prescribed me amoxicillin for one week. Even though I felt like the antibiotics wasn't working by the end of the course the ear and throat were feeling better. But 3 days after finishing the antibiotics the sore throat came back again on both sides. I went back to the gp and had blood test and a swab test done and they came back normal. The doctor said that he going to refer me to a specialist. Yesterday I've gargled with salt and warm water and I spit out 2 white yellowish round things which smelled terrible.since the the right tonsil feels better but not the left one.  But I also noticed a bumb at left side of the back wall of the throat which I poke yesterday. So today is the 5 day with sore throats and am not feeling better. To be honest I fear for the worst since I saw the bump and google it.I am going today to the gp but I'm so frightened.

Has anyone experienced similar thing and what was the outcome?

  • Hi Nina and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry with what you're contending with at the moment. It's not nice having unexplained symptoms but hopefully your GP and the specialist you've been referred to can get to the bottom of this for you.

Many of our members know how tough it is to wait for tests and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

In the meantime try to stay away from 'Dr.Google' as it will only make your fears and worries worse.

    All the best,

  • Thank you for your reply!

Its been 2 days that my tonsils feel better I'm not having pain any more and the throat it's not red. But 2 days ago I strarted to have e strange feeling like hair had stuck in my throat. I tried to vomit but didn't work. Now what I see are some bumps on my right side at the back of my tongue. When I googled it came up as circumvallete papillae and in fact I'm sure that it's them that are enlarged, one of the is more bigger and give me the feeling that's something has stuck In my mouth.  They are not changing in size since I noticed them and are not painful at all but I can feel they are there.they got the same colour as the tongue. I went to see the gp and She said it wasn't something to worry but She didn't explain what they were. Has anyone experienced something like this?

  • Hi,

hope you are all sorted? I am experiencing the same issues with the large bumps on back of the tongue giving me the feeling of something stuck in my throat!

hope you can help to put my mind at rest after confiding in dr google isn't the best thing to do!

    TIA

  • Hi jc1234

I had the same thing, I had 10 days of antibiotics for suspected strep throat after a telephone consultation with my GP.
Now 2 days post antibiotics and have pain in my right side tonsil only. My throat feels dry and as though there is something stuck there again. I had a sore throat for about 4 weeks previous but I blamed it on wearing surgical masks at work. But this got worse when I got the feeling of something stuck and bumps on the back of my tongue, with a yellow/white small dot on my right tonsil.

  • I started with a sore throat that just got worse and worse as I had it for a few weeks and it wouldnt go away.My mouth was dry all the time and then I noticed I had spat out some blood.I went to my GP who told me I had a chronic sore throat and gave me a course of antibiotics. The antibiotics didn't work and I became scared and convinced myself it was cancer,I am an anxious person at best and was sure I would die.I returned to my GP who told me he would refer me to an ear nose and throat clinic and that I would receive a letter giving me an appointment time.About two weeks after that I got my letter appointment and went to see the specialist at the hospital clinic. The specialist had a good look at my throat and said the magic words' You have nothing bad like cancer'.I was so relieved to hear that.He said I had an infected pharynx which is just above the back of the roof of my mouth. He suggested a minor nasal op that included removing a piece of my mucous membrane in my nose to enable me to breathe better through my nose especially at night. It was a 10min op under anaesthetic and I had one overnight stay and home the next morning.I was hugely glad it was all over at last.Over the following few weeks it healed up completely and no trouble since and that was years ago.Apparenly there are a lot of conditions that you can suffer in your throat and non of them are fatal and all are treatable to a successful conclusion,so please don't be scared as nine times out of ten it's cancer.I hope this helps to put your mind at rest and please please don't worry it will turn out ok just see! God Bess you.

  • Hi,

Yes I was the same, also got told it was strep throat, and also been told it was a viral infection and now suffering from body aches and tiredness is post viral fatigue, have you suffered any fatigue.
I have a dental appointment today so hopefully I can get to the bottom of all this sooner rather than later as it all is driving me crazy like I can't remember what it feels like to not feel rubbish

    TIA

  • Hi jc1234 and everyone,

Was wondering how you are all doing now?

I have had a awful time lately with same thing suspected strep throat, had pain right before Xmas for a few days and thought nothing of it, did the usual take pain relief and wait it out. But boxing day I actually looked in my throat and was horrified at the pus covered mess of my tonsils. I had a telephone consultation at my local urgent care(wasn't actually seen in person) was given antibiotics to collect and take home.

Took them and felt worse at first, body aches and high temp was horrible for days on end. Finished the course (although I may have vomited some doses up) and now like a week later my left side of my throat is hurting again! I've been checking my throat since and my tonsils are still huge and look pitted now? But the left side tonsil looks like there's white stuff coming back.

I'm sick to death I am never ill and the antibiotics messed up my body so badly! I have no idea if I should go back to the urgent care centre I got treatment from originally or see my GP. Any help would put my worried self at ease.
