Scared my husband has Lymphoma

Hi everyone

I feel really silly doing this as we don’t have a diagnosis and even the doctor has said that she thinks cancer is unlikely but I am terrified that my husband has lymphoma.

He has a very small lump (almond in shape and about the size of a pea) in the lymph node area of his groin that he says he has had for as long as he can remember. Since mid January however he has started having pain in the area of the lump and down the inside of his leg. Sometimes it is a mild ache in the area of the lump, sometimes there is no pain there and the pain is further down the inside of his leg, about half way down to his knee. Occasionally he feels like the pain goes all the way down to his foot. His job isn’t what you call active but he has to climb ladders occasionally and he finds the pain gets worse when he has had a particularly active day.

He also has two enlarged lymph nodes in his neck that again he has always had (and his dad had them in the same place). He had blood tests done years ago before he met me (4 years +) and everything came back clear. None of the lumps have grown in any way.

The doctor sent him for blood tests (all clear) and referred him for a non urgent ultrasound, however we have decided to have the scan done privately tomorrow as we have waited nearly a month and could have another month left to wait. I have done exactly what I shouldn’t have and googled everything, occasionally finding comfort but mostly terrifying myself. He has no other symptoms, no night sweats, no weight loss, no fatigue, but I can’t dig myself out of this pit of anxiety. I am a particularly anxious person (as you can probably tell)

I don’t know if anyone will see this before his appointment tomorrow but I just need to get everything down. I’m trying not to show him how worried I am but it isn’t working very well! I know there are a number of things it could be from a muscle strain to a tiny hernia but I can’t get the idea of Lymphoma out of my head.

  • Hi,

I wish I could help but all I can say is it’s great you could get a private scan on the lymph nodes. I have an ultrasound booked for Monday for a persistent enlarged lymph node on my neck and as you say the nhs although great can be slow for a diagnosis. On a positive note with all of your husbands lymph nodes I would assume that having so many and no other symptoms would be a good thing as if multiple lymph nodes are affected in cancer I would guess there would be more physical symptoms. Weight loss and night sweats etc. I hope it all turns out positive for your situation as this waiting game is horrible.

But from all all the research i have done lymphoma normally has quite a few symptoms along with swollen lymph nodes so I would agree with the doctor. Although the fact he has so many and for so long does indicate something is going on, I hope you can get to the bottom of this.
