Breast lump and shoulder blade pain

Hi, I'm Lottie, I'm 41 and I'm going to the breast clinic on Monday.  I had thyroid cancer 10 years ago and I went to the gp last week with a small lump in my right breast underneath a skin tag which has been weeping a bit. I mentioned my breast is itchy and I have had pain in my right shoulder blade for about 6 months and I got my appointment letter in the post 2 days later. I haven't told anyone about this, I have MS so my family and friends have done enough worrying about me. Can I ask please, do any of you have a similar experience? Thanks xx

    Hi Lottie,

    Welcome to the forum.

I am so sorry to hear about the small lump you've found on top of everything else you're going through. I am glad to hear that you now have an appointment for the breast clinic on Monday.

You must be finding it very difficult not confiding in anyone about this. You really need one person who you can confide in. Certainly, if they do tests, you will find it of great benefit to take someone with you to your appointment to get the results.

You must be a very strong person to be coping with all of this on your own. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 9 years. I found a lump on both occasions, but didn't have any discharge. Only 1 person in 10 referred to the clinic will turn out to have cancer, so I hope that you will be one of the other 9,

Do please let us know how you get on. You may just have tests on Monday and then have to wait another 1-2 weeks before you get any results. Waiting is always a worrying time. I am thinking of you and hoping that this is nothing untoward.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine thank you so much for your reply! I hope you are keeping well now? I have tried to tell my daughter a few times, shes 18 and I know she would be wonderful but I cant bring myself to do it. I was just discharged from the yearly hospital review last year following my thyroid cancer and I'm so fed up at the thought of starting all over again. I really appreciate your kind words, I will let you know how Monday goes.

    Thanks xx

    Hi Lottie,

My daughter was 18 when I was first diagnosed too. My mum also had cancer, so I felt i had to make her aware that she was elegible to be tested. She decided not to be, as she said that she didn't want to live with cancer hanging over her for any longer than she needed to. Instead, she checks herself routinely and, should pick up anything that appears fairly early as a result.

It is never easy to break this sort of news to family, but especially to a daughter. You might find it easier once you know what you are dealing with.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, I have 3 daughters and a son aged between 20 and 13 and I found my thyroid lump when I was expecting my youngest daughter 13 years ago so they were so little when I went through it before and I managed to keep the C word out of their lives until it was under control but this time its so different. They have university,  college and school to contend with and my eldest has epilepsy and lives in another city for uni so theres no way I can tell her on top of all her other stress! I've been 10 years cancer free so the thought that I might be going back there is so depressing.  My kids all know how to check their bodies and are aware of what is "normal" for them so we have all learned from my past experiences thankfully and I hope that will help to keep them safe.

    Xx

    Hi Lottie,

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 9 years and, had 2 excision biopsies taken a week ago last Monday to test for melanomas. One of these was on my face, under my eye and the other was on my leg. I saw 3 different doctors, who were all convinced that these lesions were cancerous. I have a son and a daughter, who were about the same ages as your children are now when I was first diagnosed. I know how hard it was to tell them then, when, like you I didn't want to upset their education as a result.

When I did get round to it both were stars. It didn't upset their university studies. We talked about it openly and have done ever since. Like you, I wasn't looking forward to having to start treatment all over again after 9 years. I got the results of my biopsies last Monday and, I still cannot believe that the results showed no cancer present. It would be lovely to think that you could be so lucky too. It sounds as if you are due a change in your luck.

I hope that all goes well for you on Monday and, am saying a wee prayer that it will all be ok.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx.

  • Oh Jolamine that's fantastic I'm so happy for you I told my daughter this morning and she was fab, so level headed and positive attitude thanks for your advice I really do appreciate it! Xx

    Hi Lottie,

I am so glad that your daughter now knows and has taken it well. A positive attitude is just what you both need just now. Hopefully you can now support one another through this.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Thank you so much, it's a relief to talk about it! I'm so nervous about tomorrow's breast clinic appointment ive to have a mammogram, ultrasounds, biopsy if needed etc. I'm lucky that where I live the first appointment is so thorough and often results are available on the same day, only biopsies take longer obviously. Thanks for your well wishes.

    Hi Lottie,

You will naturally be worried about tomorrow. I hope that you manage to get your Ultrasound and Mammogram results tomorrow. It will take 1-2 weeks to get your biopsy results back.

Fingers crossed that all goes well for you tomorrow.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
