Two week referral for bowel

Good Evening everyone ,  On Monday my Doctor put a two week referral through for me to be seen due to Bowel issues. 5 weeks ago I ended up in A&E after extreme abdominal pain and sickness. I ended up with sepsis. I was given a CT scan as they thought it was my appendix which it wasn't but told that they suspect pelvic inflammatory disease. I had relevant swabs taken and was on the ward for 4 days before being discharged. My pain hasn't gone away and last week I went back to my GP who again sent me straight back to hospital has I had a temperature and in lots of pain. I was seen on the gyne ward and told that all my swabs when I was in A&E before had actually been clear and I didn't actually have PID that and a clear ultrascan meant they discharged me but said they thought it could be my bowel. I've had really loose bowels for about a year but have just put it down to all manner of things, stomach flu, something I've ate, the swimming pool water etc. The past 5 weeks it has become worse I'm going many times a day. There is a history of bowel cancer in my family, I've been treated for low iron for the past two years which has been blamed on my periods, 9 years ago I had a bleed and polyps were found but not removed. I was supposed to go back every three years but I haven't life just took over so now I'm concerned I've been very foolish. I haven't had any bleeding though so that makes me reassured it's probably just an infection or something silly. The letter came today but it just says my referral for suspected cancer (that was a shock)  is being reviewed. Does that mean someone will look at it and then decide whether I need to actually be seen ?

Sorry that was very long winded !!!

  • Hi Pobbins.

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear about the health issues you've been experiencing. It certainly sounds like it's been a very difficult few weeks for you.

It's likely that the letter you've receieved is a standard letter that is sent to patients as an acknowledgment that the referral has been recieved and that the hospital are checking that the necessary criteria set by NICE have been met for a 2 week appointment.

If you're concerned it certainly worth giving your GP or the hospital a ring to confirm what is happening.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long to see the consultant and you'll be on the path to getting some answers.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes .
