Swollen lymph on left side of neck

Hi everyone,

my name is Charlotte and over the last few weeks I have been reading some posts on here and I thought I would join in and try and get a bit of reassurance/stories from other users.

Around 3 weeks ago I went to the doctors because I had 2 lumps on the left side of my neck, one hard and one quite soft, located directly underneath; my doctor ordered blood tests which have come back normal except for high bilirubin and low globulin which are being repeated in a month (full blood count, urea and electrolytes etc - don’t think there were any Tumor marker tests) and she also booked me in for an ultrasound which is next Tuesday. But I am really struggling to think of anything positive that could come from hard lymph with no other signs of infection, when tonight I was having a feel and noticed another node on the right side of my neck and I have gone into total melt down. I am on the verge of a panic attack, I’m terrified of dying and leaving my child and baby and I can only think of the worse. Positive stories will help or anyone in the same boat who can advice me. I know I can’t do anything to stop this but I can’t help but feel ‘dirty’? With these hard lumps in my neck, I just want them to go away. I will update as and when. Thanks for listening.

  • Hi everyone,

the biopsy results are back which shown thy3F type cells. Does anyone have anymore information on this? I will have to have surgery to remove half of my thyroid and then further testing to see if it is a cancer x

    Hi Charlotte,

I am glad to hear that you have got your results back, but cannot help you with interpreting your results. Did your consultant not explain what 3F type cells meant? Never be afraid to ask if you are not sure what is being talked about.

Have you got a date for your surgery yet? They normally send the area removed to pathology and, this is when you will discover whether or not it is cancer.

You might find it helpful to go up to the blue banner at the top of this page and click on the search engine. Insert something like 3F Thyroid and click. This will bring up previous cases which you may find helpful. You might also find it useful to phone the nurses on this site and ask them to explain what this means. You can reach them by the number at the bottom of this page.

I hope that you find this helpful. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Charlotte,

I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer 2 weeks before Christmas.  I had a full TT on the 11th Jan.

If it does turn out to be thyroid cancer you have. Please be assured that it is a very slow growing cancer.  I cant even remember when I very first felt my lump.

I am currently waiting to hear if I need any further treatment (RAI) But will not find out until July when i go back for another blood test.

I've just accepted your friend request, so if you have any questions. Please feel free to message me.

  • Hello everyone.

An update for anybody who may stumble across this post in the future...

I posted a couple of days ago after my surgery because I was so worried about my unexpected findings of what looked like abnormal lymph nodes/lymph tissue whilst having half of my thyroid removed which was deemed as u4 in ultrasound and thy3f biopsy results.

Well, my follow up was due for the 20th, however my surgeon rang me today unexpectedly and delivered the most amazing news, the lump turned out to be a benign follicular adenoma and the unexpected extra tissue was extra thyroid tissue which was growing away from the thyroid. I was so shocked and so was my surgeon and she was positive it was going to be a different outcome.

i feel so lucky and hope that my experience can give others hope in the future, whoever may stumble across this post, I have scrolled many of pages on these scary nights waiting for answers and worrying about what will be next. Please always keep hope, it’s not over until the fat lady sings.

Thank you everyone for the support over the last 2 months.

i wish everybody the best. Xxx

    Hi Charlotte,

This is fantastic news. I am so glad to hear that both lesions were benign, despite your surgeon's expectations.

You are certainly lucky, but I expect that you also feel very relieved.

It is so good to hear good news. Thank you for sharing.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi. I also have a swollen lymph node on the left side of my neck, just below my ear ,at the back of my jaw bone. it does not hurt even when i touch or gently squeeze it. It seems to vary in size and some days I think it has gone and it returns. it has been there now for several weeks. I have not contacted my doctor in the middle of this corona virus crisis as i am sure he is worked off his feet. i get no pain.

    Hi Leftlymph,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about your swollen lymph node. It is not the case that GPs are worked off their feet with the current pandemic. They are still available for routine health care cases. Most initial consultations are triaged over the phone, but where this cannot be done, you can still be seen or referred for further investigation.

I am sure that you already know that lymph nodes can swell up due to minor infections. Sometimes they settle down after this, but at other times they remain swollen. It is however just as well to rule out anything untoward.

Please contact your GP as soon as you can. You may need to tell the receptionist the reason for your call when you request an urgent discussion with your GP. Once she knows why you need it, I am sure that she will fit you in.

Do please stay in touch and let us know how you get on We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
