Swollen lymph on left side of neck

Hi everyone,

my name is Charlotte and over the last few weeks I have been reading some posts on here and I thought I would join in and try and get a bit of reassurance/stories from other users.

Around 3 weeks ago I went to the doctors because I had 2 lumps on the left side of my neck, one hard and one quite soft, located directly underneath; my doctor ordered blood tests which have come back normal except for high bilirubin and low globulin which are being repeated in a month (full blood count, urea and electrolytes etc - don’t think there were any Tumor marker tests) and she also booked me in for an ultrasound which is next Tuesday. But I am really struggling to think of anything positive that could come from hard lymph with no other signs of infection, when tonight I was having a feel and noticed another node on the right side of my neck and I have gone into total melt down. I am on the verge of a panic attack, I’m terrified of dying and leaving my child and baby and I can only think of the worse. Positive stories will help or anyone in the same boat who can advice me. I know I can’t do anything to stop this but I can’t help but feel ‘dirty’? With these hard lumps in my neck, I just want them to go away. I will update as and when. Thanks for listening.

    Hi Charlotte,

Welcome to the forum. I don't have any problems with my lymph nodes but just thought that I'd reply to you when nobody else had. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 9 years and am currently waiting on the results of 2 biopsies for melanoma.

I am not a medic, but I understand that our lymph nodes can swell up with the slightest infection. I am glad to hear that your GP has already booked you in for an ultrasound on Tuesday. It is commonplace for us all to think the worst at the outset of our tests. Fortunately, this seldom turns out to be the case, although waiting to find out can be a very scary time.

Try to keep yourself as busy as possible to distract yourself from the wait and, do your best to stay away from 'Dr Google', as much of his information is either poorly researched or out of date.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I had this when I was 13 years old, I had a large lump come up in my neck, it was on the left side also and was very swollen, i kept nothing it but unaware of the danger it could have brought and I was so blissfully unaware

i went to my GP and was referred to the ears nose and throat clinic where I underwent scans, biopsy’s, bloody tests... I was poked and prodded so much that I just got to used to it.

I remeber the the day they said to my mum that it could be cancer but again I was blissfully unaware I just carried on.

thr biopsy results can back clear and this was no cancer, my mum smiled for the first time in days, or weeks even.

17th September I had an operation to remove this which removed the lump and also part of my thyroid. It turned out to be nodules just hard little lumps within a sack of fluid which came up from an ear infection and everything was going to be okay.

im 22 now I may have struggles with my thyroid now but looking back this is a positive thing to what it could have been.

  • Hi Charlotte, I know the feeling of panicking. I have the same problem a raised hard lymph node on the left hand side of my neck and also other Lymph nodes that are raised. I was referred to the haematology unit and the doctor said I would need a CT scan, my results came back and I was advised I would need a biopsy of the area as there was more than 1 node enlarged. I’ve been going out of my mind waiting for the results, literally thinking the worst. I had my results yesterday and he said it was a reactive node, in other words not cancerous, just reacting to something happening within the body my throat is often sore and have postnasal drip which could be the cause. Been referred to ENT, so please don’t panic as more often than not it’s just a reactive node. My bloods too also came back normal so hopefully a good sign for you xx

  • hello

just thought I’d post as I have had something similar. I have a l lump on my neck and a smaller softer one a little bit lower. I have had glands up before on my neck and was told the last time to wait 6 weeks to see if they went down. I therefore waited 6 weeks before I went to the doctor and she arranged bloods and ultrasound.  My bloods came back fine. I have waited 6 weeks for the ultrasound and have been really worried but finally went today and was told it was a reactive gland and she could see two others. She stated sometimes they can be reacting to an infection and can take years to go back down.

hope that makes you feel a bit better and good luck for Tom.

    Hi EmLP,

Welcome to our community. It sounds as if your parents had a worrying time when you were going through these tests at only 13. Maybe it was just as well that you didn't realise the implications at the time? I am so glad that they didn't find anything sinister in the end, but sorry to hear that you till have struggles with your thyroid.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Cos,

I am delighted to hear that your swelling turned out to be a reactive node, after all that worry. Hope that ENT can help you with this.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Ramsey,

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about the weeks of anguish you've had waiting for the results of your Ultrasound. However, it's great to hear that all as turned out well in the end and to discover that it's only a reactive node.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Charlotte,

I just want to wish you all the best with your ultrasound tomorrow. Don't forget to ask when you will get the results before you leave tomorrow. It can be quite a worry waiting if you don't know wnen it's due.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello all,

thanks for sharing stories and positive outcomes.

So I have just finished my ultrasound scan with the doctor, I did have a chat with him beforehand and mentioned the problems I’ve been having, he had a good look at my neck on all sides and underneath, however when I asked at the end if everything looked ok, he said that he had to take a closer look at the images and my doctor will be in contact within 2 weeks.

now it’s a waiting game, praying it’s something of nothing.

I will update again shortly xxx

  • P.s. I just wanted to add, everyone always mentions they have sore throats etc in these cases which would be quite reassuring to me however I haven’t got a sore throat and I have had my tonsils taken out when I was younger so rarely get infections of the throat which is therefore why I’m also worrying a bit more trying to stay positive but feeling a bit drained. Hope everyone else is well.xx
