Swollen lymph on left side of neck

Hi everyone,

my name is Charlotte and over the last few weeks I have been reading some posts on here and I thought I would join in and try and get a bit of reassurance/stories from other users.

Around 3 weeks ago I went to the doctors because I had 2 lumps on the left side of my neck, one hard and one quite soft, located directly underneath; my doctor ordered blood tests which have come back normal except for high bilirubin and low globulin which are being repeated in a month (full blood count, urea and electrolytes etc - don’t think there were any Tumor marker tests) and she also booked me in for an ultrasound which is next Tuesday. But I am really struggling to think of anything positive that could come from hard lymph with no other signs of infection, when tonight I was having a feel and noticed another node on the right side of my neck and I have gone into total melt down. I am on the verge of a panic attack, I’m terrified of dying and leaving my child and baby and I can only think of the worse. Positive stories will help or anyone in the same boat who can advice me. I know I can’t do anything to stop this but I can’t help but feel ‘dirty’? With these hard lumps in my neck, I just want them to go away. I will update as and when. Thanks for listening.

  • Hi Charlotte, I know the feeling of panicking. I have the same problem a raised hard lymph node on the left hand side of my neck and also other Lymph nodes that are raised. I was referred to the haematology unit and the doctor said I would need a CT scan, my results came back and I was advised I would need a biopsy of the area as there was more than 1 node enlarged. I’ve been going out of my mind waiting for the results, literally thinking the worst. I had my results yesterday and he said it was a reactive node, in other words not cancerous, just reacting to something happening within the body my throat is often sore and have postnasal drip which could be the cause. Been referred to ENT, so please don’t panic as more often than not it’s just a reactive node. My bloods too also came back normal so hopefully a good sign for you xx

  • hello

just thought I’d post as I have had something similar. I have a l lump on my neck and a smaller softer one a little bit lower. I have had glands up before on my neck and was told the last time to wait 6 weeks to see if they went down. I therefore waited 6 weeks before I went to the doctor and she arranged bloods and ultrasound.  My bloods came back fine. I have waited 6 weeks for the ultrasound and have been really worried but finally went today and was told it was a reactive gland and she could see two others. She stated sometimes they can be reacting to an infection and can take years to go back down.

hope that makes you feel a bit better and good luck for Tom.

    Hi Ramsey,

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about the weeks of anguish you've had waiting for the results of your Ultrasound. However, it's great to hear that all as turned out well in the end and to discover that it's only a reactive node.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Charlotte,

I just want to wish you all the best with your ultrasound tomorrow. Don't forget to ask when you will get the results before you leave tomorrow. It can be quite a worry waiting if you don't know wnen it's due.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello all,

thanks for sharing stories and positive outcomes.

So I have just finished my ultrasound scan with the doctor, I did have a chat with him beforehand and mentioned the problems I’ve been having, he had a good look at my neck on all sides and underneath, however when I asked at the end if everything looked ok, he said that he had to take a closer look at the images and my doctor will be in contact within 2 weeks.

now it’s a waiting game, praying it’s something of nothing.

I will update again shortly xxx

  • P.s. I just wanted to add, everyone always mentions they have sore throats etc in these cases which would be quite reassuring to me however I haven’t got a sore throat and I have had my tonsils taken out when I was younger so rarely get infections of the throat which is therefore why I’m also worrying a bit more trying to stay positive but feeling a bit drained. Hope everyone else is well.xx

  • Hi charlotte

i didn’t have any sore throat or any sign of an infection and I also have had my tonsils removed.

I also had night sweats so I was very worried but turned out to be nothing so fingers crossed it’s the same for you

    Hi Charlotte,

I’m glad to hear that your ultrasound went well today and that you are now waiting for results. Did they tell you when these might be ready, or are you waiting on a phone call?

    Kind regards,

  • Hi everyone,

An update a promised, I got called into the doctors at 6.30pm tonight (unusual) and was told that my lymph nodes look normal but I have a 2cm by 1cm suspicious hypoechoic hypervascular lump in my thyroid gland and there’s a possibility it could be cancer. I’m so so upset I don’t know what to do.

  • I’m sorry to hear that and I know it probably won’t help but if it does turn out to be thyroid cancer I think it’s very treatable. My brother in law had it a few years back he was only in his 30’s but they removed his thyroid and he has been clear of cancer for a few years now.

    Hi Charlotte,

I am sorry to hear this, but please bear in mind that the doctors are not sure yet. Do they plan to do any further diagnostic tests? Like Ramsay's brother-in-law, I have a friend who had her thyroid removed almost 25 years ago and, she is still hale and hearty and living life to the full.

We all get upset at the very possibility of having cancer, it's impossible not to, but please bear in mind that at the moment, it is still only a possibility.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi everyone,

Since my last post I have seen the consultant and I am due for my biopsy on Monday with a thyroid specialist if they still are feeling the lump is graded as a ‘U4 - suspicious’ lump, then it will most likely be cancer.

Ive been trying to do as much research as possible, but I am really scared, I’m scared I have had this for years and it has spread to my lungs, or liver, or bones and there’s nothing I can do but wait. Praying for this to be benign but I think I have already accepted the fact it isn’t.

Even if it’s bad news, I want to at least hope that it hasn’t spread. Or the type of thyroid cancer isn’t severe, i know I mightn’t not be that lucky.

I’m scared for me and my two children, one of whom is still breastfeeding, my whole world has been rocked and I’m scared.

  • Just want to wish you good luck for tomorrow. I’d have thought if it had spread you would have had many more symptoms by now. I’m just starting my thyroid investigations (had bloods done now waiting to see the haematologist clinic) xx

    Hi Charlotte,

I am glad to hear that you have seen a consultant and are due to have a biopsy tomorrow. We all tend to think the worst at this stage and, the more research we do, the more we convince ourselves that this is the case. Fortunately, this seldom turns out to be so.

You are naturally scared, we all are at this stage, especially when there is a young family involved. You will have another scary time ahead of you as you wait for your results. Don't forget to ask your specialist when your results are likely to come back, when you attend your appointment tomorrow.

Thinking of you and hoping that all goes well tomorrow. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi everyone,

the biopsy results are back which shown thy3F type cells. Does anyone have anymore information on this? I will have to have surgery to remove half of my thyroid and then further testing to see if it is a cancer x

  •

    Hi Charlotte,

I am glad to hear that you have got your results back, but cannot help you with interpreting your results. Did your consultant not explain what 3F type cells meant? Never be afraid to ask if you are not sure what is being talked about.

Have you got a date for your surgery yet? They normally send the area removed to pathology and, this is when you will discover whether or not it is cancer.

You might find it helpful to go up to the blue banner at the top of this page and click on the search engine. Insert something like 3F Thyroid and click. This will bring up previous cases which you may find helpful. You might also find it useful to phone the nurses on this site and ask them to explain what this means. You can reach them by the number at the bottom of this page.

I hope that you find this helpful. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Charlotte,

I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer 2 weeks before Christmas.  I had a full TT on the 11th Jan.

If it does turn out to be thyroid cancer you have. Please be assured that it is a very slow growing cancer.  I cant even remember when I very first felt my lump.

I am currently waiting to hear if I need any further treatment (RAI) But will not find out until July when i go back for another blood test.

I've just accepted your friend request, so if you have any questions. Please feel free to message me.

  • Hello everyone.

An update for anybody who may stumble across this post in the future...

I posted a couple of days ago after my surgery because I was so worried about my unexpected findings of what looked like abnormal lymph nodes/lymph tissue whilst having half of my thyroid removed which was deemed as u4 in ultrasound and thy3f biopsy results.

Well, my follow up was due for the 20th, however my surgeon rang me today unexpectedly and delivered the most amazing news, the lump turned out to be a benign follicular adenoma and the unexpected extra tissue was extra thyroid tissue which was growing away from the thyroid. I was so shocked and so was my surgeon and she was positive it was going to be a different outcome.

i feel so lucky and hope that my experience can give others hope in the future, whoever may stumble across this post, I have scrolled many of pages on these scary nights waiting for answers and worrying about what will be next. Please always keep hope, it’s not over until the fat lady sings.

Thank you everyone for the support over the last 2 months.

i wish everybody the best. Xxx

  • Great news pleased for you , have a good summer

    Hi Charlotte,

This is fantastic news. I am so glad to hear that both lesions were benign, despite your surgeon's expectations.

You are certainly lucky, but I expect that you also feel very relieved.

It is so good to hear good news. Thank you for sharing.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
