Psa reading 7.6..(within 2 weeks)to Urology Dept for Biopsy?

Hello everyone and my best wishes to all.

I am male ,65 years old.

Long story short. I saw my GP..told her I had vague pain round my core..I had lost weight (6 Ilb)..couldnt pee properly and that was becoming a nuisance..

I had blood tests...all good except elevated PSA reading of 7.6..two years ago was below 3 I believe.?

Next step (within 2 weeks) was I am to attend Urology dept for which looks like I will have biopsies.

Since then a few things have occurred or things I have thought about to make me think it is a bit of a rush, without having another blood test.?

1: I stopped drinking alcohol and stopped drinking coffee..within three days my pee is normal...no sudden urges..and a good flow...I am amazed actually.

2: the psa test was taken following two days heavy excercise..7 mile hike.. and 5 mile fast walk...I read that heavy excercise can increase PSA for up to 36/48 hours..

3: I have no real answer for the pain around my core except that I have had three hernia repairs & I still do sometimes very heavy lifting as part of my work..it doesnt seem to be getting worse and if anything has improved.

4: The weight loss, I now think was because I did have a temperature for a few days and maybe ...not sure..had a UT infection or similar..now I am eating well and have a great appetite. My weight loss has stopped.

Can anyone voice an opinion as to why I shouldnt/should ask for a 2nd PSA test before going in for a string of possibly not needed further physical tests/biopsies etc etc..

  • Hi, I'm interested to know the outcome of yyour MRI, if you are willing to share?

  • Hi, no problem...

It showed nothing untoward and outwardly it was smooth with no obvious signs of abnormalities (cancer)..

I later declined any suggestion for a biopsy as even with 10 to18 samples being taken from a prostate it is still not a definate prognosis about cancer or not if those show no cancer (they may or may not have missed any cancerous cells.....its too hit and miss to my way of thinking.......anyway, it might be a slow growing cancer which could take 25 years to cause a problem....& personally, if it did, I think I would be dead by then from other natural causes....

I had a bi polar turp back in June and the samples that were taken during this procedure showed no cancer....:).

I may or may not have my PSA taken soon. Even that test, is not a definitive sign that one has cancer...

I will probably get flamed for being a heretic now but hey ho...

So for me the idea of having an invasive procedure like the biopsy was out of the question originally and still is out of the question....too many possible side effects and chances of infections...

ps telemando...nothing nasty. I like to think positive and hoped it showed everything was fine......& it did.

pps Atlantic....if you want to know anything more ask away....it might be an idea to request friend me and I am willing to message you any answers....

  • Thanks so much for your reply GinAndplatonic. Great to know that nothing untoward was found and long may it stay that way!

Your post caught my eye as my PSA test results came back with a score of 7.6 also. Awaiting a repeat test scheduled for November. Am 57 and asymptomatic and PSA figure jumped out of an otherwise clean bill of health in a general check-up. About to set out on a similar roller-coaster ride to yours...

  • If you would like to ask me any questions..at any time now or later then I am willing to answer as objectively as I can..regards, Geoff

  • Hi GinAndPlatonic

I'm glad it worked out for you.

This why they're now doing multiparametric MRIs.  But if the MRI found nothing suspicious then I wouldn't have a biopsy either; I'd ask for regular PSA tests and go back if they begin to spike.

You may never know why your PSA is higher than "normal" - or maybe it's simply that that a high PSA is your new normal reading.

  • Hi telemando, I thank you for your kind words. Good luck to yourself, as I seem to remember you were going through the mill again, in regards to your own test results.?

  • Hi G&P.

My latest PSA result (2 weeks ago) was just fine at < 0.1, which is what it should be after surgery.

However, I passed some blood in my water just before Easter, and after due diligence they found a very small bladder cancer (only 3mm so tiny). I had a "TURBT" in June and in a couple of weeks I've got my first cystoscopy after the surgery.  My GP says not to worry, but you can't help it.  That's two brushes I've had with cancer!

  • I wish you all the best and good luck..!

  • Thanks.  I'll let you know how I get on!
