Scared and worried

i found a lump at top of breast, saw dr on 27th feb who referred me for mammogram etc.  She said appt would be in 2 weeks, I called yesterday as I’ve had no letter.  Dr surgery gave me number for referrals and when I called they said current wait list is actually 6-8 weeks as they do busy.  She added me to list incase of any cancellations.  Is this a normal wait time?

Any advice much appreciated x

  • I was given a two week appointment schedule by my GP and was at hospital having mammogram and scan 9 days later. My advice would be to go back to GP and tell them you’re concerned and can’t wait 6-8weeks. The doctors probably have more clout than you ! My understanding is that 2 weeks is the normal maximum wait.

Dont wait, get pushy if you need to. Good luck, Liz x

  • Thank you, I’ll call GP Monday.  Referrals line said they’re unexpectedly busy...hopefully can get something sooner x

    Hi,

All urgent breast referrals should be seen within 2 weeks. Is there another hospital that you could attend? If so, perhaps your GP could refer you there?  You are entitled to this, if the first hospital cannot fit you in within the designated time frame.

Waiting times vary tremendously throughout the country. I am currently waiting for the results of 2 excisional biopsies taken last Monday. I was told to return in 1 week to get the stitches removed from my face and in 4 weeks for my biopsy results. When the appointments were posted out I had an appointment for next Monday and another for 2nd JUly.

I phoned the consultant's secretary saying that I thought that they had mistaken 4 weeks for 4 months, only to be told that 4 months was the first available appointment they had. I was also told that they didn't give results over the phone and, if I wanted an earlier appointment, I would need to phone in regularly in the hope of getting a cancellation. Needless to say, I am not leaving this there. Sometimes we have to fight to get the service we're entitled to.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Not normal at all - for BC there's a two week maximum wait.

See your GP as an emergency appointment and if the service he referred you to can't meet the two week target you have the right to be referred somewhere else.
