Mirena coil dilema

Hi

Waiting on a diagnosis as still having heavy periods at age 54 (maybe be the peri menopause but may not), so had womb biopsy, cervical smear, TV ultrasound and due a hysteroscopy. I have a thickening in the lining, might be a polyp. The mirena coil has been offered to help with periods and thin the lining which can help with womb cancer, but reading it may be linked to breast cancer. I have had numerous cysts in my breasts and feel so confused do I have the coil inserted to help or not?

Anyone have any ideas as there is so much conflicting information going about I am at a loss and feel dammed if I do and dammed if I dont.

  • Hello Goldensc,

It sounds like a difficult decision for you and one that is best taken with the advice of your doctor or a gynaecologist. If you are unsure, perhaps you could ask for a second opinion and see what the doctors advise in your particular circumstances? You can find out more about this here.

I hope others who have been in a similar situation will be along and share their own experience with you on this.

    Best wishes,

  • Yes, thank you. I am extremely anxious about it. Because I have had so many mammograms and cysts, fibroadenoma, dense breasts etc, that worries me, but so does having a thickened lining. I cannot sleep, trying to think positvely, but it is so hard. So much conflicting information on websites and just wondering if instead of the putting the coil in, can my lining be monitored for the time being. Feel gulity as well as dont want to upset my gynae.

  • Dear Goldensc,  I am in a similar situation. I had the coil in for over 8 years and it really worked to control heavy bleeding.  Then when it was due to be changed I said don’t put in another as I’m 50 now.  Then 3 months later heavy bleeding began and had continued 4 months. My womb is also described as thick and I have 2 fibroids (I think) just recently discovered.

I got a new coil in November and have been bleeding ever since.  So what I will say is everyone is different.  The coil helped me first time but not this time. I don’t know why.  Given the choice again I would try it again, but it is something you have to decide for you.

    Best wishes. S x

  • Hi Shrlock27

I will have to speak with the consultant again as I have never used Birth Control so would have to be a really good reason to start now. The coil has worked well for my friend too, however because I go for so many breast checks due to my cysts circa 14 at the moment, it is making me have serious doubts
