Found a lump in my breast.

Hi,

Im 23 years old. Just wanting some reassurance more than anything. Well about the beginning of January I started getting sore boobs I presumed it was to do with the ortho evra contraceptive patch I have been on it since August 2016. Last year felt a lump but the doctor said it was fatty tissue and it went away boobs also felt heavy as if I was pregnant if that makes any sense. Then 4 days ago I felt a lump (happend to find it as I had my arm up) in my right breast sore to touch if I wear a bra as its pressing on the lump, also my nipples were super sensitive couldnt touch as it was sore, it feels different to how it did last year. I went to the doctors and she comfirmed it was a lump and she said she will try and refer me to the breast clinic but because of my age I may not be able to. My corncern is not really cancer as I know 9/10 it isnt breast cancer but I am worried because I think I may of had the lump since January 2019 keeping wondering what it could be? Just wondering has anybody been anything similar and if so what was the outcome.

  • Thank you and my doctors told me to collect a letter so I can book an appointment. Will be doing so first thing tomorrow. Ive been checking the lump it seems to have gone not 100% sure and boobs no longer hurt apart from when I have to wear a bra and the pressure on where the lump is/was but getting a funny sensation at the same spot as the lump. Honestly think its to do with my contraceptive patch now

  • Thank you for the advice. Feels good to talk to someone and I most certainly will be checking more often.

Hope everything with you is all well x

  • Hey hun,

I thought I'd comment because you, I'm only 22, and since I was 18 have had a few very scary experiences with lumps in my breast. I know how you feel right now, and I know that no matter what odds are given, there is always that nagging in your head that it is cancer, or something suspicious.

With my experience, i got sent to the breast clinic even when my first lump appeared at 18, so if you aren't sent there, I'd definitely push to be sent, as the breast clinic can see people as young as us, and although mammograms aren't effective, I was given an ultrasound, so there are things that can be done there. So first off, push for that appointment as that's the best place to get your proper answers.

With my lumps, I was terrified as the history of breast cancer in my family was already high then, and since my mum being diagnosed in November and currently going through treatment for an aggressive form too, we have now been sent to genetics. So I know how scared you are hun, its only natural. But when there, the GP who referred me was so concerned about the lump and so certain it was cancer, when I got a phone call from her a few months later, she asked how I was and if I was receiving treatment. She had been so convinced that the lump she had felt was cancer and was shocked to find it wasn't. But at the breast clinic, a consultant examined me, and also two nurses (this was done for training, and the examination by a nurse may vary depending on the area) and then was sent for an ultrasound scan on the few occasions I've had these lumps, each time the process was the same. It turned out that theres something that makes the tissue in my breast lump together quite easily, so shows up and feels like a lump, when it's actually just healthy tissue. This may be the same for you, and if so you have to be double sure when you're checking your breasts and if there is any change, have to go back to the GP and go through the process again, as it can easily turn into cancer when the tissue builds up the way it does. It may not be the same for you, and it could be cysts, which are sometimes painful, especially when touched etc. And cysts can stay a very long time.

I hope this helps a little, but message me any time, honestly it's fine, I can completely understand you and what you're going through right now.

Lots of love and light (And although it's impossible, try not to worry, and stay away from Dr Google)

  • Hello,

I wanted to chime in and say I have the exact same thing as Alexia. I have had ultrasounds for multiple lumps and they always turn out to be normal breast tissue feeling lumpy. Most my lumps are in my left breast and that’s because I have more dense tissue there apparently so it feels lumpy.

A tip I got was to examine your breast with two flat fingers laid against it instead of prodding it with the tips of your fingers. Helps you feel lumps versus just tissue. But always get changes checked! :)

Take care and try not to google,

    Amy

PS I am now 25 but went since I was 18 for lumps. Always got ultrasound.

  • Hi Alexia and Amy. I have a lump under my armpit went to GP he said it felt quite firm. I have been referred to breast clinic and my appointment is on Thursday. I am ao worried and scared. When I initially went to a different doctor in November she felt it and said it was blocked sweat gland. Just so worried because it is firm. Sorry don’t know what im trying to actually ask just feel better when posting on here. Hope all well with everyone.

  • Thanks [@DBird]‍ you guys are so nice on here. I am just constantly googling and thinking the worst. Just wish Thursday would hurry up!

    Thanks :-)

  • Hey Amy, High 5 on us having lumpy tissuey breasts! Haha, I'm glad yours weren't anything too though, and I hope you're okay xxxxx
  • Hey Hun,

I'm glad that you've been to your GP and got a referral to the breast clinic, that's one hard part done! The other hard part, unfortunately, is waiting. Waiting sucks, but just try to stay distracted.

If it is a blocked sweat gland, this will show up on any tests they do, and depending on how symptomatic it is, they may offer you treatment. If the ultrasound or other imaging test doesn't rule anything out, dont be too worried if they do a biopsy, they mad do some just to see what's going on a little better than the scan showed.

If, like me and [@AmyErin94]‍ you have lumpy breasts too, you may find that your armpit is also prone to tissue building. But, already you have done the best thing by being referred. Stay away from Google and keep smiling.  You can also message me anytime you want to, about anything, even if it seems silly to yourself, as it probably isn't!

    Lots of love and light,

  • thanks for the reply. My appointment is on Thursday so here’s hoping for good news. The lump feels a bit smaller i think and is a bit sore since GP examined it - it doesnt bother me unless it is annoyed as in shaving or prodding it etc. Although last few days my arm has been a bit aore. Anyway will keep you posted. Thanks guys :-) xxx

  • Good Luck, although you dont need it, you've got this! At least the waiting for the initial appointment will be over soon.

Yeah definitely keep us posted on how everything goes hun, we will always be here for you.

Lots of love, and luck for tomorrow!
