Can't get a diagnosis

Hello,

just thought I might post on here to see if anyone has experienced what I’m going through. I’m 28, active with a balanced diet. I smoke about 5 cigarettes a week and have done so for the past 10 years (now stopped). Have a strong history of cancer in my family. 2 years ago my dad died a couple of days after being diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at 54 (he was a smoker)

About 5 or 6 months ago I started to get a very strong wheeze when I woke up in the morning. This mainly happened at my girls flat (which is clean). However it then started happening when I woke up in my own flat. I am quite OCD and my place is fairly new and spotlessly clean so I know it’s not anything I’m coming into contact with I have no contact with any animals and nothing has changed in terms of environment.

Anyway..... I started spitting blood most mornings 5/6 months ago, few pink spits of saliva then some dark red. I started to get very out of breath after even mild exertion. The doctor gave me some antibiotics which made me very ill. I also started the get a dull ache in the left side of chest that I could feel in my back. I quite rarely cough. I went to hospital and got an X-ray which came back clear. All symptoms apart from shortness of breath went away a few weeks later. After about a month of just the shortness of breath I spat up blood again. After a few days the wheezing returned and so did the chest pain. I went to the hospital and got another X Ray and a CT scan of chest. Both clear. I had a few days of no symptoms then the spitting of blood started again roughly every 3 weeks, it’s since progressed to be roughly once a week. It could be followed by intense wheezing. It’s strange as I play squash and I don’t wheeze after an intense hour game however I can roll over in bed at night and become very out of breath or even getting out of a chair. In the last few weeks I am bringing up a lot of clear phlegm from clearing my chest. Sometimes going to spit in the sink every few minutes. The chest clinic at the hospital can’t figure it out as I've had many blood tests so have scheduled a bronoscopy (only after my own request). Most days I have a dull chest pain on the left side and the frequency of bringing up blood is roughly once a week in either the morning or evening. Doctors dont think it's athsma or bronchitis.

Sorry about the essay, would be grateful if anyone had any advice!

Thank you

  • Hi Soundboy,

You're doing the right thing in getting all this carefully investigated. You did well to push for the bronchoscopy and hopefully you won't have to wait too long now to get some answers. If you are unhappy with the way you are being looked after by your current doctor, you may want to consider getting a second opinion and you can find out more about this here.

    Keeping everything crossed for you.

    Best wishes,
