Are ultrasounds enough to catch breast cancer

Hello,

I am a 25 yr old woman in UK and I have had three scans for different breast lumps since I was 19. Only had an ultrasound each time and it always came back fine.

I found a new lump this month (always same breast) and have another ultrasound booked this week.

My question is - if ultrasound is clear am I safe? Or should I insist on an MRI or something? I found scary stories online of ultrasound missing cancer but all seemed to be in the US ...

I am very anxious and afraid :( any answers appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Amy

  • Hi Amy

My BC was missed by mammogram and picked up by ultrasound. So ultrasound saved me! I think MRI are only done after a positive biopsy and then it depends on the type of BC. I really do understand your worry. You are in very good hands and the doctors and nurses are experts and know how anxious we are. The waiting is the worst thing. Some women have naturally lumpy breasts so stay positive.

  • I had an ultrasound twice and both came iut fine, however they never did a biopsy for either so i am worried if the ultrasound is enough. The second time i went, after the ultrasound the doctor asked me if i had got a biopsy which i didnt. That got me worried why they never did it.

However i am still with the lump and that was years ago.

Edit: the ultrasound showed it was fibroma*

  • Hi

I am not a doctor but I remember the doctor who did my ultrasound saying he could tell it was not a cyst and he did 2 biopsies to make sure. The doctors are experts and see this every day.

I am sure your lump is harmless but if you are worried I would go back to your GP. Sometimes reading of other experiences can make us anxious.

  • Thanks for your advice, my worries are not so much as they were awhile ago :)

  • Thank you so much for all the replies - I really appreciate it. Has set my mind at ease a bit :)

  • Wanted to update and let you all know that I went to the clinic today and all was well. Thanking God and my thoughts and prayers are with anyone reading this who gets bad news instead of good.

There’s still an anxious part of me that wants more tests to be sure because the lump feels so pronounced, but I was honest with the radiologist about my fears there and she reassured me that it’s very hard for ultrasound to miss a lump you can feel. She said it was just normal breast tissue that’s lumpy - not even a cyst or anything. Because it showed as nothing on the ultrasound I didn’t have the option to push for a biopsy. Feeling mostly reassured. Take care, ladies xx

  • Hi,

So glad to hear your good news. Im 25 too and have an ultrasound scan thursday. I'm extremly anxious but luckily will have my mum there for support.

I went to the clinic last october due to shooting pains in my left armpit. Specialists thought it was nothing and after feeling my boobs felt there was nothing to worry about, so I left in good spirts.

However, since then/recently I have found a lump in my left breast. Not sure if it was there before or if its new. I do have lumpy boobs though, so im hoping its just lumpy tissue or fat... fingers crossed.

Your good news is giving me hope.

I have a holiday booked in three weeks time and I just cant get excited about it because of thinking: what if?!?

  • Good you’ve got your scan booked so soon :)

I know how scary it can be waiting for a scan - don’t be hard on yourself and look after yourself (maybe do nice things to distract from the waiting). Try not to google - I did lots of searching and made myself sick with worry. Really glad your mum is going with you.

I am no doctor but if you have lumpy breasts I think that may just be it. And if it helps I had shooting pains in my ribs on left hand side a few months before the lump and told the radiologist at my apppintment and she was certain it wasn’t linked at all. Also they told me that if your breasts are just lumpy then a malicious lump would feel really different to the others - like maybe harder like a stone or pebble. Not sure if that is helpful!

Take care and please let us know how you get on.

    Hi Amy,

I can understand your concerns at only having ultrasounds to check your breasts. As someone who has had 2 bouts of breast canncer in the past 9 years, both showed up on ultrasound, although I did have follow up tests after that, possibly because I was lot older than you (60). Both were also very hard and it was obvious that they were 'different'.

If you find that you have to go back to the breast clinic again at a later date, don't be afraid to ask about additional tests.

Having said that, I sincerely hope that you never do have to return and you can now go away and lead a cancer-free life.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
