Pain in left breast on upper left side towards armpit

Hey all,

Over a month ago I noticed that my breast was really sore on the left side toward my armpit. I didn't think much of it first as I have lupus so I seem to always have aches and pains. But one day I was feeling it and I noticed that there seemed to be a lot more "tissue" in that area (if that makes sense?) than on the other side. It seems to only have gotten more sore the longer I've waited for answers. I've beent to the doctor a few times and to be quite honest I am just not impressed with Ireland's healthcare (ther is a bad rep for women's healthcare here). First doctor told me that he could not feel anything in my breast unusual at all, while poking around in the very painful area and clearly seeing me in pain. He said it was probably just an inflammation of chest wall, which seemed ridiculous to me as I can feel that it does not seem like it is in my chest wall. I told him I feel lumpiness but he wouldn't listen.

Second (female) doctor told me that she could feel no cancerous lump but that it seems to be glandular - indicating she could feel something there but not a lump necessarily. She agrees with me that it is in my breast, however, so referred me to a breast clinic which she says could take 6-8 weeks to hear back from.

I'm really worried as it is so sore and I can very clearly feel something there. Then I was reading about Inflammatory Breast Cancer and how it doesn't usually present with a lump and spreads rapidly and is virtually incurable and now I've seriously freaked myself out and feel that I get zero answers from doctors here.

I was told even after the breast check they will most likely just prescribe me evening primrose oil and tell me to come back if it doesn't go away - this seems insane! What if it is cancerous? Surely that is too much waiting!

I have never had soreness in my breast before in my life. I am 29 years old and surely if it was hormonal or something I would have experienced something similar by now?

I'm really worried. Any advice would help greatly!

  • Hello ,

has anyone had any answers yet ? I was referred over a year ago to breast clinic and the women said it was hormonal as I had no lumps and as I was only 27 st the time she felt no need to scan me . But I do not belive its a hormonal . This pain is unbearable I’m takin pain killers way to often it’s just not right . I noticed this past year my left breast become much lumpier but when I returned to GP she didn’t feel anything unusual tho I’d never had lumpy breast before and I dnt st all in right breast. Iv stopped wearin bra jus to feel some ease st times  and Iv even found myself holding my breast in public without realising because of the pain .   I’m returning to GP this week for the 3rd time  . Hope you all find positive answers .

  • Hi,

I went to gp and he also said hormonal to me but I get this pain when I have a tight chest from asthma so I went back he upped my inhalers and its not come back since.

I'm sorry if that doesn't help but maybe worth checking if it's that?

  • I was having similar symptoms for a few months, burning on left brest arm pit and side or just aching/pain. From my  personal experience and I have been to GP and had an MRI, breast exams etc. - no mammogram (i'm 31). They are pretty convinced mine is all nerve pain triggered potentially by musculoskeletal issues. That could be why there appears to be quite a few of us suffering more recently now we are working at home with our less than ideal set ups,  going out less and, if your like me sitting about being idle more than ever.

So don't always think the worst but do always get checked out .

Hope this posts helps someone as you may want to look in to nerves/muscoskeletal problems if you don't find anything in the 'cancer' tests(which hopefully you won't).

I'm now on gabapentin but symptoms are more than manageble also knowing that makes me less stressed helps also.

(I do have facial nerve pain issues which I didn't take any meds for before which is why nerves was also looked into as a diagnosis from my GP)

  • I too have been having similar issues for over nine months. Pain in my left arm and breast and have found myself increasingly anxious about it.

I have also seen gp and attended breast clinic, where I had clear mammogram and ultrasound.

This all did start when I leaned awkwardly and felt something pull or tear in my breast. I have been having physiotherapy for a while but the feelings and sensation always return.

The length of time this has gone on for is really affecting me mentally and it is always on my mind.

Maybe mine is also nerve related. I am so down over it.

    Thanks for comments.

  • I'm so pleased I found these posts. Its reassuring it's not just me feeling this anxious and helps to read positive posts. I've had an ache in my left breast and arm pit for months now. I'm at peri pause age so thought it maybe linked. I spoke to my doctor and they think because I wear a stab vest for work that's causing the pain. I've not worn it for 2 weeks and still the pain is there. I'll be contacting the doctor again tomorrow.

It's starting to really concern me now. Hopefully I'll be able to get examined.

  • Hello, I have read your above message and I'm suffering the same too for nearly a year I have had an xray, two breast examinations by two different breast doctors and they think is breast pain coming from my armpit shooting out. I'm also doing physio to see if this helps x

  • I've had the same fizzy, weird feeling down the left hand side of my left breast for around three weeks. I thought it was a bra at first, I wondered if the wire was in the wrong place, but followed this thread and saw some comments were muscular skeletal based.

my osteopath said that all of the back muscles come round and finish at that point so she didn't think it was anything ominous. I had a mammogram a couple of months ago and there is no lump, puckering, bruising or discolouration so I hope it was subside.

I'm 53 and have really been struggling with menopause symptoms too so it could be hormonal

  • Have you not thought it is possible you may have fibromyalgia?

  • Hi

I too still have left breast pain which I have had for 16 months. Sometimes it can be all around the breast or behind my nipple.

After trying to get a diagnosis I too am thinking that maybe it is something I will have to live with.

It is hard to stop myself worrying all of the time about it, and has definitely affected me mentally.

    Best wishes x

  • Hi did you get to the end of your problem I have he same worry x

  • Hi did you have any results in having same issue

  • Hi

No I still have no diagnosis. I have since had another breast exam at gp, which all felt normal. I have an another appt at the breast clinic on Wednesday. Feeling really anxious going there again, I am not sure if they will do another mammogram or ultrasound as last one was only just over a year ago. How long have you had this for? X

  • Sending love to you .... please update me as to how you get on x

  • Hi since October last year I also went to doctors and they said nothing that was 3 times finally got an appointment at the hospital and he looked at me and basically said I'm young checked me over and said to buy some pills from boots

it's getting to the point I'm examining every couple hours sending my head in torture and keep crying as I don't no what to order.
there's so many woman experiencing the same problems but not sure if any one has got a solution yet my mental health has deteriorated over this it's not fair xx

  • Hi

I have had my pain since April last year also seen or spoke to doc many times and had lots of different tablets. I also have seen a physio and osteopath but nothing has helped.

I totally understand about your mental health deteriorating. It is also all I seem to think about, which makes me not want to go anywhere or do anything. Have you tried to explain all of these feelings to your gp?

I am at the breast clinic again on Wednesday although not looking forward to it attall. I feel so anxious going there again.

    I think I am a lot older than you though as I am 57 . X x x

  • @worrywart24 how did you get on yesterday ? Was thinking about you ?
    Xx

  • So nice to hear you were thinking of me . I saw the breast surgeon, had a breast exam and told all felt fine, no mammogram or ultrasound offered as I had these just over a year ago. He seemed quite short really didn't ask any questions about my pain etc and when I tried to explain wasn't really interested .

All I can do now is try and feel reassured that it has been checked and try and forget about it.

    Thank you again x

  • It's so hard to feel reassured but we must trust the professionals.  I'm going back next week too, have had slight discharge( which they've already seen me about) but I can't stop worrying.  It's not enough to make my clothing wet but it's leaving small marks in my bra.  I think they'll say I'm perimenopausal ( they said it last time) and unless it's blood stained it's nothing for concern.  I just want reassurance ....again!!

glad all is ok -ish with you and sending love x

  • Yes it is hard to feel reassured you are right. It is so hard to stop worrying too. I think I just wanted the consultant to listen to me a bit more and maybe offer some explanation!! I tried explaining how upset and worried I had been for 17 months but got no feedback .

Good luck with your appt, let me know how you get on

  • Hi I've got the exact same pain. Slight dull ache on side of my left breast and tender near armpit. I've tried to feel around for any lumps but not found any. I'm sure near my armpit it looks a bit swollen also don't know if it's because I'm constantly prodding and poking every day. I'm also worried it's cancer as my sister had breast cancer.

  • Hi, I have had these pains too. I had a really sore left breast about a month ago. It's come back over the last few days and the pain is in a different place every day. My chest, my armpit and also down my arm. I can't get a doctors appointment for love nor money and I'm freaking myself out with terrible worry. I'm crying every day and checking my breast for changes constantly. I just don't know what to do with myself

  • Hey, I've just come across this chat as I've been Googling everything about breast pain. I am 33 and have quite big lumpy boobs. In the last couple of weeks my right breast has been in pain along with my arm and top of my right side of my back (I suffer pain quite a lot from my upper right back at shoulder blade over the years). The pain is constant in all areas. I feel like under my arm is heavy and I am very aware of it if you know what I mean compared to my right. The pain is terrible and my back pain is horrendous. I have been to see the breast clinic at hospital last November and the senior nurse done a full breast examination on me and said I have very lumpy boobs but no hard lumps that she is worried about. I said I don't understand the constant pain I get and she told me it can happen and give me leaflets on breast pain....told me to try wear non underwired bras and to change from evening primrose oil to starflower oil. The pain went away for a good while. I got covid a few weeks ago and was quite ill with it and when having it got my period at same time and I normally get heavy periods but this was worse and seemed to go on for ages. The week after I started getting pain in my boob, underarm, arm and upper back which is just horrendous... it's constant ache and keeps me up sometimes but my left side is absolutely fine. I'm now really worried and I know when I phone doctors it will be a battle to try get seen by a doctor. Can you demand a mammogram even if I am only 33? X
