hard lump in neck - GP thinks it's muscular?

Hi,

I'm looking for some reassurance.  I was ill with a virus a few months ago and saw a doctor, who said a lump I've had in my neck for about six months was a lymph node.  I had thought it was a muscle 'knot' in my neck. This panicked me a bit as I'm aware lymph nodes shouldn't be hard for no reason.  It's solid like a rock, doesnt hurt, or move.  It's under my ear, just behind my jaw where the neck joins the skull and is around 1.5cm x 1cm.  As it's still there now, I decided to visit another doctor, who this time said he thought it was muscular.  As I've had two different opinions I'm not sure what to think.  I've been feeling generally run down, my last blood tests showed slightly abnormal white blood cell count (3) and mild neutropenia (1.2) as well as a ALT result of 94 and albumin of 54.  Everything else was normal.  This could be related to the virus I had.

It's very difficult to get an appointment at my GP surgery (I had to wait a month  for this one and call 6 times) and I have a long commute to work which means it's even harder to get to the GP.  For this reason, I was thinking of getting a private appointment but wanted some advice from anyone who's had anything similar.  Do you have a muscle knot that you were concerned about?  Have you had a more sinister lump in this area?  I'm at a loss for what to do now as one doctor says one thing, and the other something else!

  • Hi there, Sally.

I have lymph nodes under my chin and one under my armpit. A bit swollen. I did many many tests, but very important echos. Nothing sinister showed up. Mines are moveable.

Have you tried an echo? It s quick and not painful. Also, they can do a fine needle biospy if there is the case.

Lymphs can be swollen for many reasons and sometimes they never go back. 2 out of 3 of my echo doctors had their own swollen lymphs, which never went down. For years.

My suggestion is to ask for an echo to put your mind at peace :)

  • Thanks for your reply! I haven’t tried an echo, I’m at a loss of what to do as the two doctors I saw said it was different things! I guess the only thing I can do is get a third opinion, but that feels like I’m pestering them a bit and I feel really uncomfortable about that!

  • P.s so pleased to hear nothing sinister turned up on yours!

  • If I were you, I would get a third opinion. Find a doctor you trust and tell him your concerns. Our lives and bodies! Also, I would ask for an ultrasound/echo. It s quick, not invasive and very helpful in clearing the picture. You shouldn t be uncomfortable. I think i ve had so many opinions that I ve ran out of good doctors in the city I live in. I still don t know why the others two dr. didn t say anything about the ultrasound. It s the easiest way to see if it s a muscle or a lymph node. Push it a bit, you don t want to live with this anxiety.

Good luck! Btw. lymphs are acting crazy sometimes, no need to panic until there is a reason to. Mines are crazy ‍♀️
