Worried and not sure when I will get my biopsy results.....

Hi,

I had an appt at the breast surgery clinic today. I wasn’t too worried as was here last year after finding a large lump in my left breast. Thankfully last year it turned out to be a large cyst and once it was drained the pain and swelling went away and all was well.

Anyway, two weeks ago I noticed a large lump at the top of my right breast just at the top of the nipple. GP wasn’t worried but referred me back to the breast clinic anyway just to be sure.

The doctor I saw didn’t have a great bedside manner.  If he too felt the lump (though the swelling has gone down and it’s no longer painful) and he did a biopsy. Though it was different from the biopsy I had last time. The syringe had a stainless steel pumping handle on it (not sure what that was about as he didn’t explain). After he finished he just said that they would arrange a ultrasound scan, see me in 6 weeks and let me know the results of my biopsy. I was a little flabbergasted and realaised I hadn’t asked when I would get the results.

can anyone tell me the usual length of time for biopsy results? Starting to worry as this whole experience was very different to last time. I’m 34 and trying to get pregnant but now feel like I have to wait to check I have the all clear....

Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

  • Hi Steff!

This must be a very worrying time for you!  I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and my biopsy results took about 2 weeks to come through.  My sister has been diagnosed with a breast cancer recurrence today and her biopsy was taken a week ago. I think it simply depends on your location in the country and also your Hospital’s practices.

Personally I’ll be having an MRI scan on Sunday to check for ovarian cancer.  The wait is the absolute worst!  Hoping to get results next week but was told that the Doctor would write to me.  Luckily my GP is very good - they received a copy of a letter from my Consultant on Tuesday and called me with the info.  I’m still waiting to receive my copy.

    Keeping busy is my philosophy!

Maybe you could call the hospital to check on timeframes?  Might put your mind at rest.

    Take care xx

  • Hi,

thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I was sorry to hear if your story and your current wait for test results. It must be a very anxious time for you and your family.

i think I will give them a call next week if I haven’t heard anything by Thursday. I think it was more that they just didn’t give any timeframe at all and it made me think I wouldn’t hear anything until my next appt in 6 weeks.

I feel totally powerless which is compounded by the fact that I am a nurse and feel I should have known better than to walk out of the appt without checking first .

I will keep everything crossed for you on Sunday and hope the results are positive.

    good luck in your journey.

  • Hello again!

I would definitely recommend phoning this week to see if they can give you any further information.  You’ve certainly got nothing to lose and if nothing else you should have a better understanding of when to expect the results.

All this waiting is not sitting well with me and being given confusing information doesn’t help!  I should be getting my blood results tomorrow afternoon from my GP.  Had my MRI today.  Asked when results would be through before I had the scan and was told about 10 days.  After the scan I was told the Doctor would call me to discuss their findings!  So did they find something then???

Still waiting for my consultants letter re the MRI appointment which was written on 8th Feb.  Doesn’t fill me with confidence in getting my scan results quickly.  I personally have decided to phone on Wednesday for an update.

Let me know how you get on with your biopsy results!  I find talking to likeminded people helps as they understand your angst!

    Take care xx

  • Hi,

so so sorry for my stupidly late reply. How are you getting on? Have you had any results?

I finally managed ages to get through to someone today, only to be told my results are ‘inconclusive’! What does that even mean?

I have a ultrasound scan booked for Tuesday the 12th and then a follow up appointment on the 13th to discuss the results. All in all it will be over a month from finding lump and seeing my gp.......

I’m praying that you have had some good news? Has your sister started her treatment?
