letter from the hospital regarding ovarian cyst

I've known I have a six cm ovarian cyst for a while, but I was more worried about it then my gynaecologist was. They said they would order some more ultrasounds in the coming months to monitor it (which annoyed me as I've already had three in the last six months) and they would decide what to do with it after that point.

The cyst has been affecting my periods, and last year I had one that lasted a six months non stop. It took a lot of pushing from me at my GP to get a referal for an utrasound as he said this was 'normal' as I had previously been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries.

At my last appointment I was also sent for a CA125 blood test to test for cancer markers- which I really had to push for. I'm only 22 and apparently ovarian cancer is not common in young women.

So I return from a holiday on Tuesday and I have a letter waiting for me. This is dated a month after my most recent appointment and when I had the blood test done.

It says that they are now going to press ahead with a laparoscopic cystectomy- which I was told was not on the table yet during my last appointment- and that the blood test results were not back yet and there would be further communication soon regarding the results.

Looking at the NHS page on this procedure it says it is carried out when there is a risk that the cyst is causing damage to the body- which mine isn't, at least according to the most recent scans, and the letter which says I am asymptomatic - or a risk that it's cancerous.

Anyway I called them up to ask about the letter and they actually have had to move the appointment I was supposed to have next week and said they will call on Monday with an alternative appointment.

I'm a bit of an overthinker anyway, but I am worried now. I was actually pushing for the surgery before- just because I didn't feel it was right- and the doctor was pushing back, and reassuring me I didn't need it. This seems like a 180 from that advice.

And to be honest, I have lost a bit of trust in the hospital I attend after so much conflicting information- and previously being really pushed on several occasions into having a transvaginal scan done even when I said I didn't want one as I haven't had sex before. I have had to push for every single test I've had done so far, and even to get a referral to a gyne took six months of appointments at my GP.

Anyway, I know it's just a waiting game now and obviously I am hoping for the best possible outcome, but no one I know wants to talk to me about this until we have something set in stone by a doctor- apparently I am over worrying- but it's at the front of my mind constantly right now.

Has anyone had the laparoscopic cystectomy?

  • Hi darcyisobel,

I'd like to welcome you to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry that the experiences you've had at the hospital and with your GP have been unsatisfactory. It's normal to be anxious ahead of the procedure, but as you say it's just about playing the waiting game for now so try not to overthink things. We have some information at the bottom of this page here, which tells you more about laparoscopic cystectomies. I hope this will make you feel a bit more prepared. You could also talk to your surgeon about why they decided to go down this route, if you are still not sure.

I hope it goes well for you,
