Can't stop thinking about this, can somebody please help

Hi everybody. As you can see from the title I've been worrying myself to death for about a year now. It all started last march when I started to notice red streaks of blood every time I passed a stool. At the time when I was passing still I felt a sharp glass like feeling and a small amount of blood on the stool never in the stool itself. I put it down to a fissure as I've suffered with them in the past and forgot about it. Eventually the sharp glass like feeling eventually went but I continued to get the red blood streak intermittently accompanied with itchiness. I got so fed up that it wasn't going away that I went to my GP which put it down to hemoerhoids the very first time and prescribed some creams which really never worked out for me. Fast forward to October I had a sigmoidoscopy and watched the whole thing. The doctors and I couldn't see anything in my colon and they mentioned at the very end that they could see hemoerhoids that were too small to bandage. Fast forward to today the itchiness still persists now and again after a bowel movement and I'm not going to lie it's really irritating and uncomfortable, really affects your day to day life. Last time I passed a stool was the first ever time it has bled so much it almosr coated the stool and was on the toilet tissue. My question is if sigmoidoscopy was clear with only hemoerhoids present but itchiness still persists could this be anything serious like cancer? I presume that the hemoerhoids had burst hence why so much blood could be seen. I saw a specialist at a private clinic not long ago who said that he could see one large and two small hemoerhoids present and that I would be referred to have those lasered rather than banded. Anyhow maybe the big one has burst I'm not sure but any help would be appreciated. Other than that I don't feel any different in terms of health wise just really lost as to what I need to do. Thank you I hope somebody replies

  • Hi,

Best bet is to go back to see your GP and explain the situation again.

I'm no expert on bowel cancer, but I do have a 40 year history of bowel issues ranging from anal fissures to chronic ulcerative colitis. Bowel cancer was always a worry to me due to family history but ironically when I was diagnosed with cancer it was elsewhere!

My GP and proctologist always asked whether the blood was bright or dull. There's more info about this at www.nhs.uk/.../

I'd say try not to worry, but you already are worrying.

    Good luck

    Dave

  • Hi, I have had a very similar experience to you. I too have these worries and I can empathize with how panicking it is to experience them. The best advice I can give is to take your time and try different healing methods. I recommend long baths, it really helps with the itching and pain you may be experiencing. If the blood is bright red it is highly unlikely it is cancer due to it being near the anus. The fact that both I and you have been experiencing these symptoms with nothing else present is also a sign that it is probably not anything serious such as bowel cancer. Seeing a specialist and seeing a GP is always the best way to get a problem solved and ease your mind about the situation, however, i understand the frustration. It's taken me a year to finally try and see a GP and I'm glad I'm doing it as I am aware it's embarrassing.
