Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Hi everyone

I just wanted to reassure you all that although its always sensible to get anything unusual for you or any persistent health problems checked out with a doctor, nasal drip and sore throats even when persistent will usually be caused by something other than cancer.

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you are still having symptoms but still no real answers about what the problem is. Do keep talking to your doctors and let them know if you experience any new or worstening of symptoms.

It is good to hear you have an appointment on friday with ENT and hope you get some more information about what is going on with the lump that you have.

    All the best

    take care

    Naomi

  • Thank you - my appointment is now in jeopardy as no idea how I can get there, as my Dad could possibly have covid despite 2 vaccinations.  I may have to walk up there, but am so anxious that I now have to go alone.

I no longer speak to the doctors- I can never get past their reception desk, and when they say they will call me back on things, they NEVER do.

  • Hello I have been reading this chat and almost every post for I would say around 4 to 5 months, I had a chronic sore throat for around 7 months and I said to myself if I ever find the cure or what caused it I would post it In here

So my sore throat lasted for about 7 months and cuased me nothing but stress, fear and anxiety.

I fist tried antibiotics that done nothing, then my GP thought it could of been reflux, I was given medication and that done nothing. I went private for endoscopy they found nothing and said it's most likely silent reflux.

I went private again to have another endoscopy but for looking at my stomach and my esophagus that found nothing and again the doctor said possibly silent reflux.

I went private again to get a head and throat MRI and again thankfuly nothing.

So after having all of these investigations and still had a sore throat I have a break down and was prescribed anti depressants and the phycologist was saying my sore throat was caused by anxiety.

After my mental health got better I just assumed I will have to live with this sore throat for the rest of my life.

Next I had a routine appointment with my dentist and I told him everything about my sore throat and he said it could be your murcery fillings that is causing it, so I had them all removed and had white ones instead

It was about 3 weeks later my sore throat was completely gone and still is today thankfully. So if your reading this and you also have had a sore throat for months and the doctors can't find the cause please go to your dentist and see if you have any mercy fillings.

I hope this helps and wishing all of you the best.

  • Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

I don;t seem to get a sore throat as much as I used to but it still happens. Like you, was told it's silent reflux but ENT found nothing to suggest it.

I do have a terrible problem breathing through my nose and finally got to see ENT again (after avoiding hospital because of covid risk, and waiting for an appointment), and he found I have a deviated septum, and because I breathe through my mouth, could have caused problems. I am down for an operation soon (not sure when yet), but hoping this helps.

Also I am going through  terrible time stress wise because of the worry about covid, and am also going through severe hormonal problems due to menopause starting.

I went to the dentist just last Thursday for the first time in 2 years (again, due to no appointments because of restrictions) and have to have 2 fillings.  I have a terrible smell in my nose, and not sure if its the cavities causing it?  I will ask if I can have white fillings, but not sure my dentist do them, and if they will cost more.

I am glad you are better, and thanks once more for your suggestions.

  • I know it's been a while but did you ever work out what it was? I'm in the same boat

  • Iv just started same problems very sore throat can't swallow food properly can't breathe at night when lie down wake up with dry mouth very sore throat bit concerned now

  • Hello Mperks12

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing some symptoms that are concerning you.

I'm afraid there isn't anyone here who can tell you the cause of these so it is important you arrange to speak to your GP.

Symptoms can be caused by a range of different things but most will have a simple and non serious reason that won't be anything as serious as a cancer.

Even if people have similar symptoms to you the outcome may be different to you so it is impossible to compare. It is much better for people to speak to their own GP so they can be assessed and referred for tests as needed by their doctor.

I hope things improve for you soon and you know more about the cause.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Hi, I've been having similar symptoms to everyone on this post and was wondering if anyone ever found a treatment that worked for them? Had a consistent sore throat for almost 4 months now...I've been to the GP twice and an ENT specialist once and none of them have found anything of concern but I just have a gut feeling that they're missing something as I'm only 23 and should'nt be having a sore throat for 4+ months!

I have a private ENT appointment next week and have booked a dentist appointment soon to get my fillings replaced like someone recommended on here (thank you!) but I just feel so down in the dumps all the time and can't enjoy my day not knowing what is causing my sore throat!

If anyone has any advice or recommendations, please post on here, I'm desperate at this point :(

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your persistent sore throat and I can only imagine how horrible this must be for you.

You do sound like you have left no stone unturned by your visit to the GP and referral to an ENT doctor.

We can't provide you with a diagnosis but hopefully a fresh pair of eyes with a different ENT doctor may be able to throw some light on the situation. I can understand that it is easy to think the worst but you are young and an age where cancer is unlikely to be the cause of your sore throat.

From what I have read in some cases it can be difficult to identify the cause which I can understand must be frustrating to hear. It is good to hear that you are going to the dentist to have your teeth checked out.

You may want to look at whether certain foods don't agree with you or you have an allergy to a certain food or even in the atmosphere around you such as pollution has an affect. I am not sure whether you sleep well at night and whether you snore as this may have an affect on your throat. Trying to keep well hydrated, avoiding caffeinated drinks and alcohol may also be a good idea.

There is some information written by ENT UK about sore throats which you can see here.

The NHS have written some information about sore throats and tips to relieve it which you can also see here

I do hope that your symptoms get better soon.

    Good luck with it all.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
