Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Hi Ginny

Was following this thread and wondered how you got on, hope you have managed to get on the treatment pathway and well on your way to recovery and that covid didnt get in the way.

Ive had a sore throat for a while but on and off, then overnight a huge lymph gland came up on my neck, just had it biospied and they said it didnt look good, hoping histopathology will be back by Thursday.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Hi I have very similar problems. I choked on something around 2 years ago and the left side of my throat has never been the same since. Feels like I have grazed it sometimes and other times it feels like trapped air? Very discomferting. Been on a load of tablets to try and sort it and nothing works. Had camera down throat and mri ect and found nothing. Two years later and the problem still persists along with other problems now too  left side of throat still hurts on a daily basis and I get bad migraines which have lead my eyes messing up too. Very sensitive to light I can literally not go outside unless I have sunglasses on because it's just too painfull  loads of black dots and lines in my vision too. Had head scans bloods tests ect cant find nothing. Feel like I'm losing the will to live. In constant pain everyday. Also I get persistant ear pain in my left ear too.

  • I don't know if this will help anyone but just incase

ive had a dry throat and mouth for years!! I've been to the doctors a few times they did a full blood screen and everything came back fine, I've never been referred to ent and last time I went to the gp they told me it was psychological lol so I've given up

but I think it could be from mouth breathing? It's worse at night I drink 2 giant jugs of water every night and wake up a lot because I'm thirsty, I drink with ice cubes too to help releave the dryness. People always tell me I drink a lot and think it's weird, I do drink ALOT of water but not sure what else to do because if I don't drink for an hour I feel like my throat is dry and I can't talk because it hurts too much, I have anxiety so maybe it's that too

    I don't know

  • Hello and thanks for posting on this thread

I am sorry to hear about the dry mouth and extreme thirst you have experienced for so long.

It is reassuring to know you saw your doctor and that the blood tests you had came back normal but the fact that it is ongoing must be difficult for you. The NHS has some more information about dry mouth here. You say you also suffer with anxiety and this can be a contributing factor so I do wonder if your doctor has suggested anything to help you with this anxiety if not do arrange a time to talk this through with them.

In the meantime you may like to take a look at AnxietyUK here and Every mind matters here who also some information you might find useful.

    Wishing you all the best

    Take care

  • Well I had a blood test last week because I told my doctors that with my sore throat I am starting to feel tired. I got checked for Vitamin D deficiency and low iron. Results came back showing I only have low Vitamin D. I've started to take some Vitamin D tablets and I don't feel as exhausted as much for now, but It's still too early to judge because my dr said "They aren't magic pills". My throat problem is still hanging around. My throat does feel slightly better but I am still in alot pain/discomfort. Just hoping when I/we next go to the ENT, they find a solution to this traumatizing thing I have. This is my update....

  • Hi it's really interesting to see others who are going through this.
I have had a sore throat since February, it came after a nasty chest infection I had which was horrible. Since then I've had this horrible sore throat just on the left side along with earache left side and an itchy sensation inside my ear.
ive had antibiotics, antihistamines, throat sprays and I've had the ent put a camera down my nose with the "all clear".

the drs are now actually laughing at me. It's ridiculous I actually don't care what I have anymore I just want it gone so I can stop being in pain. They keep saying it's nothing "nasty" so stop worrying, but I'm still in pain and are every day.

Ive been put on anti reflux even though I told them I don't suffer with heartburn and told to not contact them back until it's run it's corse of a month.

im just at a loss at what to do now. It's effecting my every day life and I just want it to be better.

  • Wonder how you got on with the biopsy? Hope all is well.

  • Sorry to say my results came back as tonsil cancer but HPV +, spread to my lymph nodes, im due to start chemoradiation on 6 July, so hopefully will be cancer free by October. The ENT doctors seem very hopeful

  • Sorry to hear this Pamela - but it is positive that you now what it is and you are taking steps to sort it all out.

I had sore, dry throat for a long time and a recent MRI showed a slight asymmetry at the base of the tongue. I need to self isolate for 2 wks, then take a coronavirus test and possibly about 13 July I'll have a biopsy. Then I have to wait up to 10 days for the results.  Everything is so starched out - the waiting and the not knowing is really stressing me out.

Glad to see you are starting treatment quite promptly - do keep in touch here, all the very best.

  • Thank you, I know the waiting game is the worst thing, once you know its slightly easier, certainly in terms of getting some sleep.

All the best for your biopsy, I hope its all clear xx
