ViN worries

Hello

About6 years ago I went to the doctor about a sore area on my vulva. Eventually went to see the gynaecological oncologist who upon doing the colonoscopy, told me that I had Vulval Interepithelial Neoplasia, and in his words: 'the whole lot will have to come out or it will be cancerous within 5 year's.' I was ushered out and told an urgent appt would be made. I had to Google it as he didn't explain anything. The next day an appointment for surgery arrived on the mat. I still didn't know quite what they were going to do! I went for the surgery, and a different person saw me as I was sitting in my hospital gown and stockings! He was an Attending, I think. He said he didn't think it was VIN, so wasn't going to do the surgery, but would take biopsies instead. The biopsies were negative. A subsequent visit to a dermatologist said everything looks healthy apart from vulva eczema. I have a recurrence of the discomfort and soreness below, even whilst using the spray for ezcema. Do you think I should go back to GP to check again, or am I just paranoid because the gynae oncologist was so adamant it was VIN that he was going to do the excision without doing a biopsy to check first. Im worried if I see the same gynae oncologist that he may want to excise the area again. Any thoughts please?

  • Hi MarthasMum,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing a recurrence of your symptoms.

It's understandable that you're concerned about the prospect of seeing the same consultant again however it would seem very sensible to go and see your GP about these symptoms. There may be something simple that they are able to deal with for you. If the Dr does recommend a referral then you can discuss your concerns with them ahead of any appointment.

Come back and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
