Skin biopsy - beauty mark on foot

Hey everyone

I have a family history of skin cancer (dad and grandfather) , I went to the doctor and she told me they need to remove a beauty mark from my foot that was thin and long

They took a biopsy and she scheduled an appointment 4 weeks a head

The appointment is on the 13 this month

I called today to the doctor office , to see if they can send me the results instead of going and the girl that talked to me told me I have to come because its pre-cancer and they need to schedule for an excision.

When I asked why and what is the result she told me she dont know and its still pending in the system.

I don't understand why I need to do an excision if they don't know the results?

I wasn't worried but I am really starting to.

Is it a common thing to do???

Its my first time doing anything like this .

  • Hi Lilo1111,

Was the girl from your GP's surgery or the hospital consultant's clinic? Was she a receptionist? I find it odd that she gave you this information as it should be left to the consultant to explain it to you at your appointment. It seems you have been given half a story which isn't helpful, especially as receptionists or consultant's secretary's are not allowed to give such information to a patient!

I can only guess, and I may be wrong, that the biopsy showed it was a dysplastic naveus (pre cancerous) and it needs further tissue removing to ensure there are no cells lurking in the surrounding tissue (this is the usual step in these cases).

If the information came from your GP's receptionist I suggest you contact your consultant's secretary. Explain about the information you have received and that it was incomplete & ask if either the consultant or a nurse can ring you back to explain it further before your appointment.

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
