HPV and lump in breast

Hello so I'm trying not get worried and stay positive. About a month a go had a smear test which came back with HPV. I have my colposcopy next week. But then 2 weeks a go I noticed a lump in my breast. I went to gp and am waiting on referral to breast clinic. I have a 5 month old baby and a 2 year old. I am breast feeding the baby still, gp ruled out anything feeding related. Lump is about 2 cm towards middle of chest. It is hard, painless and doesn't move. I'm also experiencing very slight bleeding between periods. I'm really starting to worry and hate waiting for answers.

  • Hello and thanks for posting.

Sorry to hear about your situation. This must be a very worrying and unsettling time for you needing to go for for further tests and not knowing what will happen next. Unfortunately at the moment no one can give you the answers you are looking for and this can cause a lot of anxiety.

The cervical screening programme is designed to detect, monitor and treat any abnormal cells until they return to normal. This is to prevent the risk of them turning into cancer cells further down the line ( this normally takes 10,20 or even 30 years to become cancer) and that's if they ever do. High risk strains of HPV cause the majority of abnormal cells to occur in the cervix and the only way they can be picked up is through a smear test. You have an appointment in the colposcopy clinic and here they will be able to have a closer look at the cervix. They may take a biopsy and sometimes treatment is carried out on the same day to remove any abnormal areas, but the colposcopist will explain more to you on the day. You can read more about all of this here.

Most breast lumps whilst worrying are benign ( not cancer) often caused by cysts (build up of fluid) or fibradenoma ( non cancer tissue growth). The important thing is you are going to the breast clinic so that further tests can be carried out to be sure. Often a mammogram or ultrasound will be offered and they may wish to take a biopsy using a fine needle, you can read more about this at this link.

Try and not to over think things if you can and try and keep yourself busy and your mind on other things whilst waiting. If you have more questions then please get back to us or if you would like to talk to a nurse call on 0808 800 4040, we are here Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm.

I hope all goes well for you.

    Take care,

    Naomi

  • Thank you for your reply. I will try to keep my mind off it until I can find out more. It's hard with young children not to worry but at least they will keep me busy.
