Periods lasting 6 weeks

Hi, I am 20 and I have had belly aches for about 2 years now.

in December last year I started a period that has last 6 weeks with one day intervals. Went to the doctor she referred to a gynaecologist all clear. Had a ultrasound nothing found, now the doctor wants another ultrasound.

has anyone had this before or has any idea what it could be.

thank you.

  • I haven't had this problem but am copying a few lines from the NHS website relating to periods:

"Your periods can change, for example they may last longer or get lighter.  This doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem but it does need to be investigated.  You can go to see your GP or you can visit your nearest women's clinic or contraceptive clinic."

I realise you have already seen your doctor and a gynaecologist.  I am only bringing it to your attention as you might like to try your local women's clinic the information for which should be available under the NHS information website.  It might be worth waiting for your further ultrasound but there is a chance that  somebody at the women's clinic has some useful information about this.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Back in October, I had a three week period, followed by several week-long periods with only 10-14 days between each one. Ultrasound found a small, benign ovarian cyst, and either that or my contraceptive coil is the likely cause. I will be recalled for a follow up scan in a couple or months, but that’s just to check that the cyst has gone away by itself, as it should. It’s unlikely, at 20, that you have anything to worry about, but you can ask your GP for hormonal contraception as a way to regulate your periods.
