Breast Pain

Hi, since before Christmas I have been having an uncomfortable feeling in my left breast. The way I'd describe it would be a heavy feeling. Ive been to the doctors twice since New year now and had 2 physical examinations and he cannot feel anything unusal or any lumps. Ive been feeling pretty tired lately too. Ive mentioned this to my doctor too and am waiting for some blood test results back. He has given me some ibuprofen gel and has told me to change my bra to a support bra. Im honestly worried sick, its on my mind constantly. Its draining me. The doctor isnt concerned and has said he cant refer me for a scan with no lump and to see how I am in 3 months time. Im worried sick.

  • I've had on-and-off pain in one breast for over 18 months now. My GP did agree to refer me, as I also had some red irritation on the skin, and she wanted to rule out inflammatory breast cancer. I had an ultrasound on the breast and armpit (am in my early 30s, deemed too young for a mammogram), and absolutely nothing bad was found. The breast surgeon I spoke to explained that some women just have pain there for no sinister reason, and often it's referred pain from a chest or shoulder muscle strain.

You can pay for a private ultrasound, which will set you back several hundred pounds including the consultation fee. Or you can see another GP and request a second opinion. But as I found out, pain with no other symptoms (e.g. orange peel skin, discharge, lump) is very rarely a sign of breast cancer. I hope that helps a bit.

  • Thanks for the reply! Im only 21 so also too young for a mammogram. Im just so so fed up of being worried sick. Its making me so upset:(

  • Hello

I'm in a similar situation. I have pains in my right breast and arm pit, and now the pain is starting in the top of my back. I've been waiting for a referral appointment for 7 weeks.

Did the gel or changing your bra help ?

  • Hello, its been 4 days since i changed my bra to a comfort one with no wires and have been using the ibuprofen gel. I find its feels better yes but im worried incase its just masking the issue,it's a hard one x

    *am not a medial professional*

hello! I can understand your anxieties about this! My mother had breast cancer! Pains and aches in a breast can’t be worrying, But don’t worry. If the doctors suspected cancer, they would have refered you straight away and done further test. Ultrasound, was clear snd they explained, what it would be. I have the occasional pains in my breast! Don’t worry yourself over it, you’ll be fine! As for the gel hiding the issue, i highly doubt a ibuprofen would shadow cancer, if they suspected anything wrong on your scan they would of said, to you there and then! Your fine :) don’t worry :) let me know how you get on!

  • Hi all I am in a very similar situation with left breast pain started on the 11th of october 2019. It is still there and very concerning. No other symptoms.

I have been to 4 GPs, breast specialist and had an ultrasound scan which came back as normal.

I also had a hospital admission with centralised chest pain the night before my breast clinic appointment as I was sick worried about it.

truth is no reason was given for my pain - it is common and affects many women, it may be hormonal or not... yet I do not have an answer to my pain.

I actually think I am losing my mind worrying about it - I am constantly looking things up online, keeping myself up at night, I lost interest in most things and have regulr panic attacks.

i have now booked myself for another consultation and ultrasound scan privately (250 pounds) which is not something I can afford but I am so not settled! I just keep worrying that maybe something was missed in the first scan.

  • Hi I am in a very very similar position and constantly very worried, did you ever get any further response from doctors? I hope you are okay now xxx

  • Hi ladies, im in a similar situation I've had pain in my right breast since October back then I would say it was sorer it has calmed down but im still tender. I went to my gp in November and she checked me over and said everything felt normal I felt a massive relief she gave me gel and I continued to use it after a few week it eased off. It hasn't went away and the last few days its been a bit tender but it seems to be when I'm checking its as if I'm making it more sore. Im only a b cup and pretty flat chested I cant feel anything but this pain has been in my mind and I'm constantly googling looking for answers. I've stopped wearing bra and due to lock down either wearing no bra or a bra with no wire and im still experiencing the tenderness. My gp did say I could go back. Now my minds been working over time and everything I read it says pain isn't sinister but I cant understand why im tender. X

  • I to am in this situation and can't stop worrying. I have many other health conditions and am nearly 62. I had mastitis when breastfeeding 31 years ago, which left a tender area ever since but all was always okay on my mammograms. I had my last mammogram a year ago and all was clear.

For around 3 months now I have had what I can only describe as a burning sore sensation in that same breast and it spreads down into the nipple. Sometimes it even hurts when I breath or move, other times it just feels like sunburn, sometimes it's a stabbing pain.  I first noticed it in the shower when the water hit it. I eventally saw the doctor a month ago and he examined me and was not concerned - said it was mastaglia. He said come back if it doesn't get any better.

Needless to say I couldn't get a telephone appointment for today and have to try again tomorrow. Driving myself crazy keep googling everything! I just keep telling myself that a) he wasn't worried and b) I have no other symptoms at all.

  • Hi

I have had breast pain on one specific spot on left breast since about June 2018. Feels like how a bruise would feel to touch or press on. I have been examined by different doctors who said Mastalgia/possible cyst. I am at a new surgery now in a different area and have asked if I could be referred for a scan. Im about to be 40 and still have periods, although a short cycle and do not feel as though I am pre menopause. I am feeling constantly worried about why I have had this pain for so long and the doctors do not appear concerned enough for a referral to a breast clinic. I was told unless I have a lump then they won't. I can not even tell if its a lump because feels like its around my rib cage on the inner side of my breast and every time I examine myself it just hurts to press. Surely breast pain can not last this long??
