Is it true there is a biopsy back log?

Hi all,

mum has been waiting for a breast biopsy for 18 days now i was starting to relax abit and thinking she would know by now but farther in law has just said there is a huge back log with getting results out does anybody know if this is the case.?

  • Hi there ..

I too saw a news clip .. but if I remember rightly, they never said breast cancer test .. if I were you I'd call your G P .. there's a two week refural for breast ... remind them it's past 2 weeks and you want a date ..

I had all my tests and results back in that time .. so good luck .. it's deff worth pushing them .. it's your mum's heath .. so don't think your pushing them needlessly ..

Let us know how it goes .. lots of us breast lasses on here .. if there's any questions .. Chrissie x

  • Hi thanks for replying,

its been a long process has this whole thing she got told she had cancer by a surgen on the 2nd jan without biopsy results on the 7th she was told biopsies were neg and was just an abcess but they needed to operate so on the 15th she had an op and they took more biopsies wich she didnt know about :| and these are the results she is waiting for but she just cant see passed these results its all been a big mess really. Xx

  • Hi ..

Unfortunately sometimes they find more lumps in the op they never saw on the scans .. it looks more likely to be neg to .. not impossible, but likely ... sometimes pesky lumps hide behind others .. l also had lumpy boobs .. and my first four call backs from mamorgrams were all clear ...

The thing I'd be pretty mad at is the surgeon who said she had cancer .. that's as far as l know a big no no , till the biopsy tests are back .. sometimes they say "may be" or "could be" but to say that without results back , l can't imagine ..

Fingers crossed for a good result .. Chrissie x

  • Hi,

How would your FIL know - does he work in the local NHS or did he just read about it in a newspaper.

If the latter, he’s probably conflating shock-horror stories about a backlog of non-urgent screening tests at a national level with local urgent biopsy tests. The two are completely separate things.

The turnaround times vary from place to place and from one test to another. My own initial biopsies took from between 10 days and 4 weeks to come back - the longest were the HER2 tests.

There is a 2 week breast cancer target but sadly since 2010 from breaches of this target being rare local exceptions to the target being missed at a national level for several months.

Good luck with the results - the waiting feels endless, I know.

    Dave

  • That surgeon’s unprofessional conduct needs reporting.

  • In your personal opinion, since the ope a week later she did have a follow up with the breast clinic to see how everything was healing and they said rite we will see u in 6 weeks, and at the very end just casualt said we dont bave the biopsy results back as yet(that was the fist time she knew she had second biopsies)and just left it there, does is sound sort if positive that they are happy leaving it 6 weeks and that the biopsy could just be to find out the infection or just procationary?  Xx

  • Hi davek ..

There was a programme on t.v were loads of tests from biopsy were still in lab waiting .. loads of them .. but l think that was from other cancers not the Brest ones this lass is talking about .. unfortunately I forget what area that was mentioned in the programme. .

Hope your keeping well bud .. bet you can't wait for summer to get back to your adventures ..

    Chrissie  ; ))x

  • Hi ellaloz.

Well it sounds quite positive .. now this is in no way certain. . But in my opinion they wouldn't leave it six weeks if they found a cancer .. but that's a hundred percent ... coz every district has different rules ..  so hold on and if your still worried give them a call earlier and tell them the wait is making you really anxious ... see what they say .. though the main rule is not over the phone .. but you never know ..

    Fingers crossed ... Chrissie x

  • Hi davek,

thanks for taking the time to reply. No he does not work for the nhs i have taken what farther in law said with a pinch of salt however i also just wanted to double check if people who are already in the system so to speak had heard anything.

yes the surgen gatherd the mammo ultrasound and sat her down in a room with a breast nurse and said these exact words.” They ask me what this is it is cancer without a doubt this is cancer” mum collapsed in a heap and he just handed her Over to the breast nurse whol told her about all the different cancers there are and gave her a card if she needed to talk and told her thay when she comes back in a week we will know what type of cancer it is. When mum returnd a week later. To find out what type it was and the biopsy was negative the same nurse was sat in the consultation ( different surgen) as the surgen said you must have miss heeard my collegue and he may have said u might have cancer the breast nurse never backed her up. I think if these next biopsies come back clear the time he has stole from my mum we will absolutly be taking this further.

  • I think I saw that one - they were smear tests not biopsies if it was the same programme.

My own FIL didn’t call his GP when he was ill because he’d read a headline in the Sun which screamed that it was impossible to get a GP appointment. Luckily his son called round on a routine visit and dialled 999 - it turned out he’d had a stroke!

That’s the problem with sensational news articles they play to people’s fears and lower our expectations.
