shpuld I be worried? Would you be?

I went to the GP 2 weeks ago as I bleed every time I go to the toilet, bright red often with clots. I thought that I had haemorrhoids. The GP did the finger test and said she couldn’t feel anything and sent off a sample which came back above the normal upper limit on calprotectin but not massively so (237 limit is 50) due to family history of colitis and crohns I was referred under urgent to gastro but apart from the blood issue I have no other symptoms that would suggest either certainly no diarrhoea or urgency.  The other symptoms I have are getting out of breath easily, and a tiredness that is beyond anything I’ve ever been.  Including those newborn baby days.  I also get a lot of heart burn and pain under my rib cage.

The consultant had a quick look with a camera and light and said it looked like the blood was coming from just inside where a haemorrhoid would be- she’s referred me for a colonoscopy which again will be done in the 2 week time frame. Surely if it was a haemorrhoid she would have seen it I’m worried they think it’s something more serious and just aren’t telling me

  • Hi Houseboat123,

I'm sorry you're experienced this bleeding, but try not to worry. As your consultant couldn't find a haemorrhoid, it's important for them to go through all the possibilities just to be sure, hence the colonoscopy referal. I'm sure they are not hiding anything from you.

Here is some information about what to expect ahead of your colonoscopy, which will hopefully make you feel more prepared.

    All the best,
