Lump in my neck

Hi

I'm just looking good for some advice,

I have been to my GP today as I noticed a lump underneath my left ear approx 3/4 months ago.

He is referring me for a ultrasound through the NHS, I just want to know can anything sinister be detected through an ultrasound or is a biopsy needed?

I am considering going private as I don't want this hanging over my head for several weeks.

Thanks in advance for your advice

  • Hello.sorry your worried I would imagine the ultra sound measures blood flow or to see if ther is any blockage there, you could ask for a biopsy whilst your there.Hopefully there won’t be anything to worry about.Good luck xxx if it makes you feel happier to go for private then do so at least it will be quick. The NHS do a fast track of two weeks if they think it’s concerning xxx

  • Hi there Victoria

sorry you are having to go through this stressful time. When someone presents with a lump or bump in the neck often the first diagnostic test as well as a physical examination is an uktra sound of the area as its not invasive. The radiologist will examin both sides of your neck using the uktra sound probe and will be able to see the composition if the lump on the screen. They will be experienced in this procedure and from the picture on the screen they will then make a decision on whether they need to take a biopsy or not using a fine needle. The specimen will then be sent to the lab for histology. They will not be able to give you a definitive diagnosis on the day but may give you an idea if it’s something to be concerned about. I have to say that my hubby had his done privately following seeing an ENT Consultant as we had private health insurance - it cost approx £450 and it was done the next day rather than having to wait.

wishing you lots of luck and hope it is just a swollen lymph node

  • Hi i have exactly same . A neck swelling  below my ear and jaw . Dr thought it may be a stone in my salivary gland . He has referred me for ultrasound which he said should be 2 weeks .He also ran blood tests , all normal apart from raised crp . The swelling became very painful and I had discomfort in my face and teeth so I took Nurofen plus and it settled down . The swelling has gone down and now there is a smaller hard lump which gets bigger when I eat . I'm inclined to think it's a stone . I don't have any symptoms of a virus or infection .

I am a week on from seeing GP  and I hope ultrasound appt comes soon .

I hope you are not worrying too much although I have too been anxious .

Keep us posted on how things develop . Fingers crossed for us both that it turns out to be nothing too serious .

All the best . Hopefully everything will be ok
