Worried about abnormal cervix

I had a check up at the doctors as I experienced some dark brown discharge. I am on the mini pill and my periods stopped altogether so this was unusual for me. My smear tests have always been clear. My last smear was nov 2016. Doctor examined me and said he could see something unusual on my cervix. He said his heart told him it was nothing serious but he’s referred me to the hospital to get checked. I am so scared it’s cervical cancer. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • Hello Kd72 and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to learn about your situation.I wonder if your doctor suspects that you might have a cervical ectropian. If this is the case ,then this a common condition caused when cells from inside the cervical canal, known as glandular cells (soft cells), are present on the outside surface of the cervix (neck of the womb). Cervical ectropion can be caused by hormonal changes, pregnancy and being on the contraceptive pill. It is not linked to the development of cervical cancer or any other condition that causes cancer.

Vaginal discharge and spotting is the most common symptom. Treatment is not usually required except when women have excessive mucus discharge or troublesome spotting.

The charity, Jo's Cervical Trust has some information about them at this link

The hospital will check you out and tell you what they think.

  • I recently had a smear test and was informed by the nurse that there was an abnormality possibly due to the contraceptive pill.

i was frantically trying to remember the name -cervical ectropion.

i am so relieved to have found this chat and link to Jo’s cervical trust . I feel so much better.
