Worried I could have mouth cancer

Hi my name is Madison and I am 21 years old. Over the past few days, I've gotten a sore throat, most likely because of smoking. I've been a light smoker for a little over a year, but i'm definitely quitting now. What i'm worried about is that at the back of my throat, there are 3 lumps that have appeared. I don't think i've noticed/felt them before. Is there a good chance this is mouth cancer? I'm pretty worried about this. Stupidly, I knew about but ignored the dangers of smoking, thinking there was no way i could get cancer so young but this has definitely shook me up.

Edit: Thanks for the responses, glad to know it could just be an infection. I've booked an appointment with my GP, just in case it's something serious. My throat's still red raw and there feels like there's something stuck in the back of it. The pain's gone away mostly though, so hopefully that's a good sign. Kicking the cigs is going to be hard, my mind keeps fixating on them, even with the sore throat and the worrying lumps. I never thought I was this addicted, smoking only a few a day, but already the cravings are hard to ignore, but I suppose I am. I went from smoking once a week, to once every few days, to once everyday and finally a couple everyday in just a few short months. I guess i've got to keep distracting myself from them, but it's hard when i'm worrying about my throat, which inevitably leads me to thinking about cigarettes.

  • Hello Madison and welcome.  Don't panic (but do stop smoking!).  Lumps on the throat are not so very uncommon and can be caused by numerous things like an infection or a cyst - to name two off the top of my head.  If this continues your GP is the person you need to contact as s/he may want to give you some antibiotics for instance.    It would be very unusual for someone of your age to have cancer but as you are obviously worrying it is best to get it sorted and put it behind you.  By the way, wrap your throat up warm in the cold weather we are having.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Hi Madison.

Just reading your post and I can only back up what Annie has said.

This time of year throat infections are rife. You maybe find if  you have smoked with a throat infection it has made it feel worse. Our mouths are full of little glands that swell during infections,so you may find this is the case. If it doesnt settle down then see your GP but they usually say if its still there in 3 weeks come back and see me.

Try a gargle of warm preboiled salty water often. It will sooth and help heal.(yuk I know).

If you get nicotine urge I recommend you get the nicotine lozenges since you are a light user. Please dont go back to the cigs or even ecigs as you are young and aware of what they do to you.

Take care and keep well. xx
