Ongoing Symptoms and No Diagnosis

Hi,

I am a 41 year old male. I consider myself to be fairly healthy, I like to eat relatively healthy, enjoy exercise and rarely drink alcohol.

I have been having ongoing symptoms for around 4 1/2 months.

It started with a vague, mostly lower abdominal pain, that comes and goes, it is more on the right hand side of my belly button than anywhere else. Over time, it has become more frequent and intense. It is sometimes in my right hand side as well.

A few months after this, I developed a dull ache deep in my back, predominantly under my right shoulder blade, again, it comes and goes and the frequency and intensity has become more intense over time. I have had muscle pain in my back before from over exerting myself in sport or lifting a heavy object, this is different to that type of pain, not as intense.

Since the onset of the abdominal pain, I have had various other symptoms, again they come and go....

An indigestion type feeling the indigestion feeling isn't a heartburn type feel, but more of a feeling that something is stuck in my throat that is ready to come up back up (but doesn't), I have been getting a mild feeling of nausea with this as well. I went through a period of a few weeks where I was belching excessively immediately after eating (this had now subsided, though has come back more mildly on a few occasions)

Fatigue. I am normally an active 'get up and go' kind of guy, though I started to feel very lethargic and unmotivated.

Chemical taste in my mouth and tongue sores.

A racing heart/heart palpitations.

Light headiness and dizziness.

My belly constantly pulses up and down, which is especially noticeable when sitting or lying down. I have been told this is completely normal though it's something I have never experienced before.

Changes to my normal bowel habits.

I have had blood tests, a colonoscopy, an endoscopy, a general ct scan of the abdomen, a specific pancreatic protocol ct scan and so far nothing has shown up other than mild divertucolosis and two cysts on my liver (5mm and 2mm), my gp said that neither of these are anything to worry about nor would they cause my symptoms. After these tests my gp said I must have anxiety and depression, he referred me to a clinical psychologist and prescribed me mitrazapine. I don't agree that my symptoms have been caused by anxiety or depression, as I was very happy in my life at the onset of the symptoms. I agree that I have since had a degree of anxiety due to the symptoms persisting and getting no answers. I have since seen the clinical psychologist and a new gp who both agree that this is not anxiety related.

Has anyone experienced similar symptoms or have any idea what could be causing them?

I have googled my symptoms over this time, I guess it's only human nature to do so when you don't get answers from doctors. One thing that has been a concern, because some of the symptoms match, is pancreatic cancer. I know that it would be rare to happen at my age and that I have also had scans to look for it. My concern is that I have read that CT scans do not always pick it up or scans have been misread.

Does anyone know how well these scans can be relied upon to detect pancreatic cancer?

I'm not saying I'm convinced I have PC, though it certainly has been a worry for me. I would just like to know how confidently it could be ruled out.

Thank you

  • Hi, sorry you are going through this. I’d get your gp to refer you to a gastroenterologist or to a consultant specialising in Billary disorders who will check out the liver area more. Have you had a MRCP or a EUS ? Only I ask is because my husband has a lot of similar symptoms (especially the shoulder pain and stomach bloating) and he has pancreatitis which has probably been caused by microscopic gallstones blocking the ducts in pancreas area. But they don’t show up in standard ct scans only in EUS or MRCP. Good luck I hope you get sorted.

  • Thank you for your reply Sammyjo,

I have a referral for a gastroenterologist, though it's not for another few weeks.

    I haven't had a EUS or MRCP..

Did your husband have any lower abdominal pain with the pancreatis?

  • Hi Jamie J,

i have just read your post and it brought tears to my eyes. I have had numerous tests done over the last few years. I had a colonoscopy last December which came back clear. But for the last few weeks I too have been getting a pain in my upper right abdominal area but like you, it comes and goes. Sometimes it’s pretty bad and almost feels like a burning pulsating feeling?! I went to the doctors to discuss this latest symptom and she felt my abdomen but didn’t say anything and when she did it there wasn’t any pain. I discussed the countless times I have been to the GP over the last year and she looked at my history. She said I had had an abnormal liver function test result in January and should have been called back for another blood test. She did say it was only slightly raised but even so, slightly alarming that I am now with this pain. I too have googled and convinced myself I have liver cancer and quite frankly I am terrified.

She also said I would have a scan but still haven’t heard from the hospital. Also the blood test was booked for 2 weeks after my appointment.

Ivwas windeting if you had any joy finding out what your problem was and if you are ok?
