Multiple lymph nodes in neck

Hi

just wondering if anyone has been through or is currently going through this, I have about 4 enlarged lymph nodes in my neck that I know of , from what I can feel the one on the left side of my neck Beneath my ear is around 2cm firm but not rock hard and not moveable , I have 2 pea sized moveable ones and one grape size moveable one . I have had them that I know of around about 2 years with no change is size, I went to the doctors a couple of months ago and she said it was because of my acne (which I have had untreated for 5 years) so she changed my pill and that has really cleared up my acne but the lymph nodes still persist with no change? I am going back to the doctors tomorrow as they are worrying and if you couldn't already tell I have severe health anxiety , is it true that lymph nodes can just stay permanently enlarged after infection ps. I have had no weight loss, night sweats or anything just a little tiredness as I have been iron deficient , overalls feel fine apart from this anxiety taking over my life

I would really appreciate and comments thank you xx

  • Hello,

Sorry that you’re going through this worry at the moment. I am currently going through the exact same. I have 8 lymph nodes that I can feel, 3 on the base of the back of my neck have defiantly been there for about 2 years. Recently found more above my collar bone and sides of neck and behind ear. All pea sized, soft and very moveable. I haven’t been ill recently which sparked my worry.

I went to the doctors on Wednesday who felt them all, had to point him to some as he couldn’t feel them but found them eventually. Said it was unlikely anything sinister but referred me to have an ultrasound so I’m waiting for an appointment to come through. He didn’t tell me if it was going through as urgent.

my anxiety is also through the roof I have no other symptoms apart from being tired but I have a one and half year old and I am also 10 weeks pregnant. I feel so worried about all of this and can only think the worse all information I can find points to cancer.

how did you get on at the doctors?

    I went ant to the

  • Hi sorry so late at posting again I didn't think anyone would've text me on this lol , the doctor that day said she couldn't feel the one which I think is around 2cm , she kept trying but couldn't feel it which was very frustrating because I know it's deffinatley there and but the other ones she could feel she said felt normal, I also discussed with her my health anxiety and she referred me for CBT which I haven't had yet I just hope when I do it's going to help with this horrendous anxiety, still got all the same nodes now , haven't changed in size I don't think but still worry me daily

  • Hi Marie.1234

i really understand your anxiety I am exactly the same everyday!my lymph nodes have been swollen since March last year and the biggest one u der my jaw is now 2cm so it has slowly gotten bigger since March last year  where it was as measured at 1.2cm on ultrasound, In September I had an MRI and this one was 1.5cm but the report said not suspicious just slightly enlarged???I also have a rock hard one just down from my ear,my GP and ENT keep telling me they are reactive but I still have this fear it’s a cancer that’s spread there....especially as I have a small growth on my bottom eyelid same side as lymph nodes in my neck!I don’t understand if they are reactive they have never gone down?? I hope you can get some answers as to why yours are swollen, keep us updated and I wish you all the best! Xxx

  • Hi Miks77

sorry to to hear about your lymph nodes and anxiety , we seem to be in the same boat , I went back to the doctors a few weeks ago and they finally referred me for a scan and ent appointment but it’s not until the 5th June the waiting is driving me mad!

Have you told your doctors that one of your lymph nodes have grown? If nothing suspicious has shown up on neither your mri or ultra sound then that is quite reassuring but I know exactly how your feel because I never believe my doctors even though I know I should it’s a vicious circle , I will update when I’ve had my app , try not to worry too much ( easier said than done)

    take care x

  • Hi Marie.1234

Thanks for your reply! I did go back to my ENT dr as it’s really bothering me, i have a strange feeling in my neck under my jaw where the biggest node is almost like a throbbing feeling....it definitely has not gone down and if anything feels even bigger! I have yet another appointment for an ultrasound on Thursday.... certainly is hard not to worry I’m still worried it’s related to my eye as I’ve had ongoing problem with my right eye and this is the same side as the biggest lymph node.... I hope you manage to keep busy over the next month before your appointment I totally agree it’s very hard not to think about it and waiting for appointments doesn’t help the anxiety that’s for sure, for me it’s a constant worry and I just have a bad feeling that something has been missed! I will let you know how the ultrasound goes on Thursday and I wish you all the very best. My MRI was last year in September which did show the lymph node was enlarged 1.5cm then but not suspicious apparently but this node has now been in my neck along with other smaller ones for more then a year and now it’s growing.... So far they keep telling me it’s reactive... I just would like to know what it’s “ constantly “ reacting to! Have a great evening and will chat soon!

take care of you too! Xx

  • Hi Marie.1234

so I had my ultrasound yesterday and the lymph node under my jaw has grown again it is now 2.5cm, the other ones are still smaller, he said it looks benign on US but it’s too big so Ent has put me on antibiotics  then a follow up ultrasound in two weeks, if it has not gone down then they will take the lymph node out and biopsy. So I’m obviously terrified as I can’t think of anything that would cause it to keep growing other then cancer. I will keep you updated, now I’m trying to focus on my three little children but it’s very hard to put this out of my mind. I hope you are feeling ok!

    take care

  • Hi Miks,

I am having very similar symtons to you and just wondered how you got on? I have a lesion on my left eye that I am waiting for a biopsy for. The glands on the left side of my neck have swollen up (submanibular and others) and there are several small pea sized glands on the right side of my neck. I'm terrified that my eyelid lesion is cancer (had it for 6 months now) and that it has spread to my nodes. I saw the doc this week who did blood tests that came back normal which was less reassuring in a way as I don't feel ill so was hoping there was a reason for my glands swelling and the bloods would indicate this. I hope everything is going well for you and the results were what you'd hoped for.

  • Hi Ewar

sorry to hear of the problems you are also having. I don’t know anymore yet as I have my follow up ultrasound this week on Thursday, but I’m like you have submandibular lymph node now 2.5cm plus smaller ones on both sides of neck. I was back at the eye clinic last Monday they’re  still saying my eye seems ok just blocked membion glands and I have a notch in the middle of eyelid where I had a small tumor taken off last year ( that came back benign as Seborrhoic Keratosis)I’m still not so sure though as my eye has never been the same since that biopsy and it’s super dry a lot less eyelashes on this eye and slightly swollen all the time...I know I shouldn’t but when I google those symptoms plus lymph node swelling what comes up is Sebaceous Carcinoma, I did ask eye dr about this he didn’t seem concerned even though I have the swollen submandibular ( same side as eye)and cervical lymph nodes? I guess I will finally get an answer once they do the excisional biopsy on my lymph node. I will let you know once I have had my ultrasound on Thursday I guess I will be booked in for the biopsy as the lymph node has definitely not gone down since taking the antibiotics. Do you already have a date for your eyelid lesion biopsy?I hope you can get some answers soon too!

    all the best

  • Hi everyone

hope your all well , [@Miks77]‍ I did read that there is a lot of benign Tumours that can grow in the salivary glands ( I see yours is under your jaw) did they say it’s a salivary gland? And they can grow quite slowly or fast, I’m unsure as to weather mine is a parotid salivary gland as the doctor said it could be a blocked salivary gland but I won’t know what it is until my app in 3 week. For about 6 years I’ve had a lot of trouble with my jaw , pain , stiffness , tension headaches and migraines (always been a headache sufferer from a child) can’t open the jaw fully eaither and on the left side when I open my mouth it feels like the jaw joint is sticking out and it doesn’t on the other side ? So I don’t know if they could be linked.

trying to stay positive , hope you guys get to the bottom of the problems with your eyes and nodes , I wish more people would come back to this forum after they have found out what’s wrong have you seen many people come back here with cancer diagnosis of lymph nodes?

    Take care xx

  • Hi Marie1234.

all I know is the biggest one is a submandibular lymph node he did ultrasound the parotid and submandibular glands and said they look fine I’m not sure if it’s the same thing or a separate lymph node? I also haven’t noticed many people posting with cancer spread to their lymph nodes but I’m not sure how I would feel either having that diagnosis I will keep you all updated though and hopefully with a positive post! Waiting is so hard it just makes the anxiety grow! Wish you all a great weekend!

yes I see what you mean but yes would be great if u could keep us updated I deffinatley will too, I know the waiting is killing me , keeping my fingers crossed for you

    have a great weekend everyone

  • Hi, just read your post, sorry you are on here and are waiting for results. Last May I had a lump in my neck, when I got my ultrasound and biopsy done , they said my paritoid gland was ok but submandibular gland looked suspicious the doctor doing the ultrasound said not to worry as it could be a thyroid problem., the biopsy came back with a rare form of lymphoma. I had treatment which ended in November. I had hardly any saliva but I have an auto immune disease as well and just thought it was that. Unfortunately six weeks of remission, the same lump came back again on the submandibular gland, more biopsies and unfortunately my cancer was back. It was too soon to have more treatment so as I feel well enough, I am on active watch and wait as it’s an indolent blood cancer. Hope this post doesn’t worry you too much, most biopsies do come back with a negative result. Guess I was the unlucky percent. Hope everything goes ok, even if it is the worse result, I coped very well on the chemo. Keep us posted.

  • Hi

so sorry to hear what you’ve been through, hope you can start treatment again soon and beat this nasty thing , if you don’t mind me asking how old are you and what was your lump like as in hard/soft big/small? Also did you have any other symptoms with your first lump , was it growing in size? You don’t see many people come back to this forum with a diagnosis most of the time so the only questions you can ask is google and the results are always worrying!

    Take care x

  • Hi, my lump was hard and it was quite large, it wasn’t movable and you could see it easily, I also lost a lot of weight, had night sweats and had terrible fatigue which again I thought it was my autoimmune problem. After the biopsy the lump did go down a bit in size but didn’t go away till after 3rd chemo. The lump I have now is pea size but you could see it easily on the ultrasound, my hope is I don’t get any of the B symptoms like the last time for a long time, after I had my ct scan, it showed enlarged nodes under my arm and at each side of my lungs and kidneys, I am 65 now. Hope this helps you.

  • Hi scones

thank you so much for answering my questions really appreciate it, Im quite a hypochondriac and I’ve had this lump in my neck for 2 years but I don’t think it’s grown and I haven’t had any symptoms but with what I’ve read online I’m just scared it’s some sort of indolent slow growing lymphoma , I have some other lymph nodes in my neck which are quite small , I know this would be rare as I’m only 22 but I have an ent app in 3 weeks so hopefully will get to the bottom of it , I really hope you don’t get any b symptoms too , please keep us updated x

  • Hi, you are young but at least you getting it checked out. If you don’t have any other symptoms they prob wudnt treat it just now. Try not to worry, if the ENT consultant is worried he will do further testing

  • Thank you for your support , I look forward to my app to try and get to the end of this , did they say how long yours had been there ?

  • Hi Scones

im sorry to hear that your cancer is back, i hope you can begin treatment again soon and that you are soon in remission again.

To be honest I haven’t even thought of Lymphoma I just keep thinking it is a metastatic node that has come from perhaps my eye as I’ve had problems with my right eye but I guess I won’t know exactly until after the biopsy. I do have nodes on both sides that are reported to be reactive but the largest is now 2.5cm you can’t see it from just looking at my neck but can feel it easily if I run my fingers over it. It isn’t hard or soft it’s kind of firm and a bit squishy, it’s movable but it kind of throbs a lot atm. These nodes have been “ reactive”since March last year but this one submandibular lymph node was always the biggest, it stayed stable at 1.5cm for a long time which is why no one seemed too concerned as it wasn’t growing, but in February this year I had a horrible sore throat lost my voice for a few days and was in a lot of pain with my throat especially every time I  swolled. After that I noticed that the lymph node seemed bigger ( this was in March now)so went back to Dr who said my lymph tissue was irritated in throat and lymph node was now 2cm so sent back to ENT but just told it was  reactive still because of throat it should go down again, that didn’t sit well with me as I knew it didn’t go down so fast forward to beginning of May and I went to a new ENT who did another ultrasound and said it’s 2.5cm( long) x1.8cmcm, he said all the criteria they use on ultrasound show a benign lymph node except size,(it’s too big )so  said we should try antibiotics and I come back in two weeks for a follow up U/S and if not smaller then an excisional biopsy. Antibiotics have donebnothing ,my neck still throbs on this side and I guess it’s either bigger or same size. My appointment is Thursday and I’m extremely worried. I am 42 have had a squamous cell carcinoma off my stomach in 2015  which said it was all gone ( good differences the biopsy report says)as well as two basal cell carcinoma off my nose in 2016, so I’m a bit worried about these lymph nodes in my neck.I have had no other symptoms such as night sweats etc.

sorry for the long winded post I always seem to go on and on

    wishing you a lovely Sunday

    take care

  • Hi Miks,

How did your appointment go today? I hope it went well. Update from me, no biopsy as the eye doctor said he thinks it's residual material from the chalazion I had drained and 'there is nothing to biopsy and no actual lump'. I should be pleased with this but just wanted a bit of scientific proof really. I should trust the doctor though as he had a really good look through the microscope and all around my eye. He also felt my lymph nodes and seemed concerned that the GP hadn't referred me for a scan. She has now but said it could take up to 12 weeks, she clearly wasn't too concerned by the nodes. She put me on antibiotics to try and reduce the swelling but no such luck! Will have to chase for a scan so I don't go out of my mind with worry! Hoping your appointment went well!

  • Hi Ewar

Appointment went just as I thought, Ultrasound showed no reduction in lymph node after antibiotics Actually only by 3mm which they say is nothing and that we have to do the excisional biopsy now as that’s the only way to know what it is. The chief ENT dr gave me no clues as to what we are looking for as he just said he doesn’t know as it’s nothing obvious they can see and again said the ultrasound findings look benign/ reactive except the size is too big. It measures 2.39 x0.4 x0.3 I’m not really sure I understand the measurements  and how they do it except it’s 2.39 cm long by 0.4  wide???but it’s oval with hilius etc like a reactive lymph node? So long story short no idea still what is in my lymph nodes! They are just taking one as all the others are under 1cm. The biopsy is on May 31st and I will be in hospital for 4 days. I’m so scared I really don’t like anything hospital wise  and I’m certainly not brave when it comes to needles etc, even when I had my children I couldn’t wait to get home! I will keep you updated after biopsy!

It’s great news though you don’t need a biopsy! I understand how you feel second guessing the drs I’ve done that too which has finally lead me to where I am  today! My eye dr also isn’t concerned but I can’t shake the feeling this is related to my eye too. Good idea to investigate the lymph node further if it hasn’t gone down and hopefully then you can get some peace of mind!

Right im off to enjoy these next two weeks as much as I can with my kids in case I don’t get a good biopsy result!

take care and please keep me updated with you too, wish you all the best!
