Lump in lower Stomach - Gp not treating as urgent what to do

Hi all,

I'm after some advice / experiences please. I'm a 35yo female & last xmas (over a year ago) I started with bloating to the point where clothes would not do up. Assumed it was festive overeating etc. Normally a size 10. Fast forward to mid Nov 2018 I was away on a course and noticed in the hotel long mirror that one side of my bloated stomach was sticking out noticeably more (it was left side) there was a distinct swelling on the lower left of my tummy amidst the bloating.

I visited the gp as had had some blood in stools and in the loo, plus constipation. He could see the swelling and thought it was perhaps near ovary - took til almost Xmas to get that scanned via ultrasound and ruled out as he couldn't put it through as urgent as he needed a female gp to examine me (he was junior & didn't feel he could check properly).

in the meantime general bloods have come back as normal aside from anemic (not very about 12.7) and vit D very low. Went back to gp again beginning of Jan 2019 and they were trying to blame it on ibs saying as bloods were OK and as I'm young there was no point in sending me for a scope. I again reiterated the blood in stools, constipation, a pain that had now started around the area of swelling and was getting worse and feeling sick, I asked him to get his superior in.

they eventually agreed to investigate it but he rang me later that day and said after a surgery review they had just decided to refer me to 'surgery' at my local hospital, so sounds like it wouldn't even be a scope on that day just consultation. That appt is not til 5th Feb.. So over a month from the last gp appt - clearly not in the 2 week urgent guidelines.

Having to take Senna each day just to get bowel movements... And pain around the swelling area getting more constant. Swelling doesn't feel hard to touch but even friends can see what I'm talking about. Doctors asked me to cough etc to rule out hernia and they can see it too - really baffled as to why they wouldn't put it through as urgent.

what should I do? Is it safe to wait that long? Looked at a private check cheapest is around £875 for a virtual colonoscopy. :(

sorry for the long post, I have two very young children and I'm sick with worry and feel I've been fobbed off & delayed by the gps at my surgery.

  • Hi I have exactly the same as you, did you find? How are you?

  • Sounds like I've had a similar experience to some of you. I'm 32yo female.

7th December I started getting a dull ache in my left side (between bottom of rib cage and hip). Within a few days I started having diarrhoea, nausea and loss of appetite. 18th December I was laying in bed awake and started feeling around the area and found a hard lump, size of a ping pong ball under my rib cage in the area of the ache. At this point I'd convinced myself I was going to die of cancer (having had a friend the same age pass away earlier last year from cancer).

I rang 111, they said go to A&E, so I did. They tested urine, found a tiny bit of blood and said it sounded like kidney stones and referred me for a CT scan in a few days time. Blood tests came back fine. A few days later the hospital called and said they'd reviewed my case and they were going to do an ultrasound rather than CT scan. The ultrasound didn't reveal anything, they said all my organs looked healthy and when I said I was worried about the lump, the doctor had a quick feel and said "that's your rib" and basically threw me out of the room.

I mentioned my experience to a counsellor I know and she said it sounds like health anxiety and this pain could basically be my mind playing tricks on me. I've since been put on anxiety medication and referred for CBT. Whilst I no longer feel like death is imminent, I do still worry about the pain and the lump and am constantly googling it etc, hence me landing on this thread. I had an appointment with my GP this week to talk about the medication and I said I don't think I'm going to be content until I discover what this pain is, so she said she'd refer me for a CT scan, which I'm waiting to hear when it'll be.

Now over a month later, I still have the full ache in my side and the occasional twinge in the area. when I feel around, I can still feel this lump and can also feel the same on the right side in exactly the same place (which is hopefully an indication that it's something that is meant to be there). They don't move and feel like solid balls, not bone. I'm hoping that as the ultrasound was clear, the CT will also be. No doctor I've spoken to seems to suggest what the pain could be, other than the counsellor saying it could be linked to the anxiety.

    hope you're all okay x

  • Hi my name is Sarah I'm 40 years old and I've been having problems for approx 3.5 years now it started with pains in my lower tummy and various toilet issues and sickness the doctors seemed to mock my worries and diagnosed me with ibs immediately I tried several medications loperamide mebravine (unsure on spelling) and something else my blood tests showed I was anaemic and I was suffering from vitamin d and folic acid deficiency.

for years my pain continued I was suffering extremely bad cramps with sharp pulsating pain sometimes and it almost felt like a dead arm muscle pain (numbness) at others. I was really unsure of what was going on and I kept going back to the doctors eventually they thought that maybe it was something to do with the bowels that wasn't IBS as I was now suffering with acid constantly pain in my back and a mucus bowel movement only.

they referred me for a camera and the diagnosis was that there was nothing wrong other than having a tiny pile and that was where the blood was coming from sorry I forgot to mention that I was also having bleeding in stools sometimes.

i was discharged with pain relief yet again

this pain continued for approximately two years they said I was clear for cancer chrones disease etc and that it was just the IBS only over the last year I have been suffering with extreme pains, swelling and bloating in the stomach

In the last year and a half I've gone from a size 22 to a size 8 I've lost approximately 15 1/2 stone and now weigh under 8 stone for the last year I've been on ensure advance drinks as the doctors can't explain such dramatic weight loss I was eating multiple meals regardless of the sickness because I feel desperate I hate my body now until recently when I became more unwell but I cannot gain weight still and have only gained two pounds the entire time then lost 7 pounds within 11 days

this continued and for several months now I've been struggling to eat or stomach anything I feel very weak some days like I'm going to pass out so I've been back to the doctors yet again numerous times always being brushed off with paracetamol and unfortunately due to them not taking me seriously I became quite ill.

I started to have other problems pain in my back my neck hips and other joints, I had more bloods xrays scans and found out my amylase levels were high then there was a cluster of blood vessels in my liver then a pocket of blood in my liver too random lumps started to appear in my tummy, the front of shoulders under my arm pits and in my legs

after attending the doctors with a lump in the right hand side of my stomach that was protruding the full size of my hand the doctors finally referred me to the hospital or so I thought as I was advised that this was the procedure to continue but unfortunately I never got any appointments as the referral was never even sent and then I started with irregular vaginal bleeding also and pain inside so that I couldn't use Tampax anymore I felt extremely swollen downstairs.

One night I became quite poorly the pain was unbearable now and my tummy was very swollen I literally looked  about four months pregnant i knew something was wrong I rang the doctors who unfortunately arranged a phone consultation for 3 hours time but never actually followed through and I then rang the out of hours emergency service they attended my home and took me straight up to the hospital I was bleeding severely from the uterus at this point luckily enough a gynaecologist came down to see me and I explained to him the problems I was having including the bowel issues weight loss etc he asked if it was okay to examine me of course I gave full permission because I was quite scared at this point it literally felt like my tummy was going to burst and I couldn't go to the bathroom at all.

He wanted to admit me to SAU straight away as he said it was quite serious and went to arrange a bed unfortunately a different Doctor Who hadn't even examined me decided I was to be discharged with painkillers and Tranzonic acid as there wasn't enough beds.

The Doctor Who had examined me wasn't happy with this and decided to refer me to gynaecology for an urgent appointment as an outpatient

I got an appointment for it quite quickly within two weeks so I went to my first Gynaecology appointment and was hoping that something was going to help me because the pain was getting unbearable on a day-to-day basis and it was rare that I had a pain-free day these days also at this point I was having to take things to help me go to the bathroom with no choice other than to physically manipulate my bum in order to be able to pass movement which as you can imagine was very unpleasant.

I was lucky that I saw the gynaecologist consultant as when I went for my checkup I explained my symptoms both vaginal and bowel and upon examination the consultant could clearly see there was a problem with my stomach he thought immediately that it was an incisional hernia from previous surgery and that the swelling could be pressuring my organs he referred me straight to colposcopy due to my previous history of cin3 cells and to the surgeons as the lump was bubbling and popping

I then had some colposcopy treatment and some surgery and after recovering I went to see the surgeons I had a Cat scan with contrast to see if it was indeed hernias as when the surgeon consultant examined me she explained that there was a lot of stomach muscle weaknesses all over the abdomen and that it was possibly a variety of hernias and she needs to be sure but my results came back showing no hernias and an incidental finding which I will explain now.

firstly I certainly don't want anyone to panic anyone I'm definitely trying not to panic myself but the findings showed that I actually had a thickening of the lining of the small-bowel.

now this can be caused by multiple things not just life threatening things.
of course there are serious ones which is why a lot of you are on this page it's natural to worry and want advice but there's also things like infections so this diagnosis isn't necessarily one to cry home about just yet

I do understand that some of the possibilities are quite serious and I'm certainly not making a joke of that as i have a large family history of cancer and lost several loved ones along the way so I have been scared and upset I'm just now trying to see the light at the end of the tunnel as I have children to consider

My treatment is currently ongoing some days are better for me and some just aren't great I am only taking paracetamol to relieve the pain and I've been using the deep freeze gel and spray which does seem to give me some relief probably more than the paracetamol to be honest

I've got another consultation with the surgeon on the 26th of this month January 2021

I was meant to be having an MRI of the bowel and intestines with contrast on the 22nd of this month but unfortunately I can't stomach the Plex and due to needing both contrast investigations I'm now awaiting instructions on how to move forward from the consultant on the 26th

my post isn't a scare tactic it's more of concern for other people due to the neglect ive suffered it's been a long road to get this far but hopefully I'll have a diagnosis soon a real one anyway and I will update

I just wanted to make other people aware that they really should push this because I'm glad I did if I hadn't I wouldn't know what I know now regardless of how many doctors laughed at me Or how many ignorant doctors said it was just my mental health

the truth is it's your health at risk not there's so please  don't be bullied or manipulated just because they're a doctor id advise you all to follow your gut instinct and follow it through no matter what!

if I hadn't I might not be at the stage I am now getting the treatment I really needed and last week I was informed all my organs have dropped due to dramatic weight loss gravity has pulled them down apparently and that I have a split in my stomach wall along with the previous finding yet these ignorant people would of completely misdiagnosed me with nothing more than ibs

Facts are if it is something serious maybe this time next year I wouldn't of even be here to advise someone else

    Take care of yourselves x

  • Hi I also have a mass near the navel and nothing in the exams, please keep us informed

  • Do you get pain with this ? And can you feel it in your tummy?? I have been back to docs today and she thinks it feels like my kidney too! Is there some sort of name for it as to why you can feel your kidney???

  • Search for Nephroptosis. Floating kidney. I do get pain with it sometimes, as it feels a bit trapped if sitting in some positions.

  • Hi,

I know this is 2 years later but did you ever get answers for this??
For just over two months I've felt a lump on my right side just above my hip but it goes in, so when I lie flat it will stick up then go back in, I have slight achy pain on that side some days and when I have period paid it's all on that one side too. I've been pestering the doctors and they are crap. I went for an ultrasound and they couldn't see anything so not I'm worried it's a lump further in and it's something bad. I ended up going a&e because my doctors were taking forever and the doctor there had me sitting up and down an he actually felt it where as the doctors couldn't because when I lie flat it's gone, I feel like they think I'm lying because I suffer with bad health anxiety. I don't know what I'm supposed to think when I can feel a lump moving around! Like you said it makes me feel sick it's like I have a baby there it's so strange!! Been trying for weeks to find stuff on the internet but just came accross this now x

  • Hey! This is pretty much the same as what I have drs have suggested IBS but I know I can feel the lump. Have you heard anything back about your problem? X
