Lump in lower Stomach - Gp not treating as urgent what to do

Hi all,

I'm after some advice / experiences please. I'm a 35yo female & last xmas (over a year ago) I started with bloating to the point where clothes would not do up. Assumed it was festive overeating etc. Normally a size 10. Fast forward to mid Nov 2018 I was away on a course and noticed in the hotel long mirror that one side of my bloated stomach was sticking out noticeably more (it was left side) there was a distinct swelling on the lower left of my tummy amidst the bloating.

I visited the gp as had had some blood in stools and in the loo, plus constipation. He could see the swelling and thought it was perhaps near ovary - took til almost Xmas to get that scanned via ultrasound and ruled out as he couldn't put it through as urgent as he needed a female gp to examine me (he was junior & didn't feel he could check properly).

in the meantime general bloods have come back as normal aside from anemic (not very about 12.7) and vit D very low. Went back to gp again beginning of Jan 2019 and they were trying to blame it on ibs saying as bloods were OK and as I'm young there was no point in sending me for a scope. I again reiterated the blood in stools, constipation, a pain that had now started around the area of swelling and was getting worse and feeling sick, I asked him to get his superior in.

they eventually agreed to investigate it but he rang me later that day and said after a surgery review they had just decided to refer me to 'surgery' at my local hospital, so sounds like it wouldn't even be a scope on that day just consultation. That appt is not til 5th Feb.. So over a month from the last gp appt - clearly not in the 2 week urgent guidelines.

Having to take Senna each day just to get bowel movements... And pain around the swelling area getting more constant. Swelling doesn't feel hard to touch but even friends can see what I'm talking about. Doctors asked me to cough etc to rule out hernia and they can see it too - really baffled as to why they wouldn't put it through as urgent.

what should I do? Is it safe to wait that long? Looked at a private check cheapest is around £875 for a virtual colonoscopy. :(

sorry for the long post, I have two very young children and I'm sick with worry and feel I've been fobbed off & delayed by the gps at my surgery.

  • Have they ruled hernia out for you?
im unsure which scans show the most details, I've had two mri's this year and didn't enjoy that experience at all . Can you get a second opinion. ? X

  • They have, and one doc was convinced it wss my ascending colon. So weve been gping down the crohns and colitis route as i have ibs too but mostly ruled that out now. Waiting for last mri result back and if all ok im going to ask for another ultra sound for a srcond opinion. When i saw the consultant for gatrology, he said it felt like a hernia to him ?! Honestly its driving me mad and soo anxious all the time :( x did your mris not show anything up??

  • Hiya, my Mri' s were for different things as all my problems started with numbness in my arms and legs . I had a brain mri on nhs to rule out certain conditions and I paid for a spine mri (I did this as I had a fall last year and some back pain ). My stomach systems are very recent and on top I got costochondritis but whilst dr says it's viral I'm still sceptical as it's my right side that took the impact of the fall and all my issues are where I had the impact . I'm convinced I've done something internally but it's hard being believed . You sound as though you're going through a tough time . I just want to be normal again

  • I know exactly how u feel. Sick of being worried. And just want to feel ok again. I hope u get to the bottom of it soon and keep me informed if u get any answers x

  • I have the exact same as Tarakay 87. I can feel it moving around has a burning stinging sensation and I can feel my pulse in it at times. My bowels are regular. It feels like a mass or something. There is stinging pain all around my belly button as well. Going for ultrasound next week.

  • Let me know how you get on please. I am still suffering and it is causing more pain and problems. I'm suffering from blackouts now x

  • Yes it causes me pain and is so so uncomfortable. I am massively struggling to put weight on still and am now suffering blackouts . How have you been getting on x

  • Hi to you all, in early 2012 at the age of 41 I started with this exact same thing, a bulging feeling that rises to the top of my abdomen when I lie down, I can press it and feel air escaping from it and, back then, I felt sick all the time - I had an upper GI endoscopy and learned that it was a harmless cyst on my diaphragm, 64mm x 55mm, that was pressing down onto my stomach.  Interestingly, once I learned that it was harmless, my anxiety levels dropped to the point where I stopped feeling sick all the time!  When I feel it rising now, it doesn't bother me at all.  I was a terrible catastrophiser, over the past (almost) nine years I've learned that our bodies have lots of strange quirks but for every terminal illness there are about five hundred non-terminal ones.  Make sure you get everything checked out obviously, but I hope my story helps.  And if you do have an upper GI endoscopy, they're not as bad as they sound - I had a lovely relaxing time with a nurse who had to hold my head still, stroking my hair really comfortingly - as lovely as the sedation they gave me.  Good luck, Mayesy

  • Hi I've just found this post and I'm experiencing something very similar! I have a hard lump that seems to move up I can visibly see it moving across and a gurgling/popping sound however I also feel very weak at times, nauseous and have started getting backache. One other thing I've had since this started is a white coating on my to tongue which is not normal for me. Has anyone got any answers at to what this might be? Thank you.
