Should I be concerned?

Hi, this is my first post and would like some advice please.

Just after Christmas my left lymph node swelled up in my left  breast and my breast was slightly painful underneath,  I thought nothing of it as I was due for a period any day. I had my period and they lymph node continued to cause discomfort. overtime my neck, collarbone, armpit and breast node on the left have been swollen, I've even had one in the left groin and left elbow area all on the left side. I also have pain on the left side of chest, arm and shoulder blade, I have had no symptoms of cold, flu or infections but they continued to be swollen but sometimes it seems it goes on and off. I called 111 as I had these bad chest pains that travelled down my left arm, they referred me to a&e and was given an ECG, all clear. I then went to their G.p and he said he could definitely feel node in my neck and to go back to my g.p for blood tests and possible ultrasound. Pain in chest continues went to g.p and she just gave me antibiotics saying I've probably got an infection. Took antibiotics and no change so went to my local nurse and explained everything in which she referred me for inflammatory blood tests and full blood count. She said even if normal she wants me to book back in with Dr and ask for a breast clinic referral. Been told all bloods are clear and no need for further action .

Still have lymph node pain and swelling on left side neck, collarbone and arm and discomfort in chest, shoulder and arm and sometimes under the left breast and will be into the 3rd week now.

Do I go back and ask for the referral? I know at my age different hormones with play havoc with the body. I don't bother Googling as I know the big C word will come up and then all sorts of emotions happen. I've had pain in breast nodes before which are normally linked to my periods but never had these other ones before and the symptoms that go with it.

Could I have some advice please?

  • Hiya,

Im sorry to hear your experiencing all this, being in pain is never nice. I would go back to the docs and at least talk to them about that referral, if the pain and the lumps had gone then I would understand about no more action being taken but since you are still experiencing all these I would see what they say for piece of mind if nothing else. Hormones are a pain sometimes, its really good that all your tests have come back clear but I think extra investagtion is wise for your benefit. Very good plan not to check google, it will always come up with the worst senario :/ I hope you get to the doctors soon and they investiagte a little further. If you want to, please let us know how you get on, we're always here if you need any support at all.

  • Went ba k to the same Dr and she checked chest snd oxygen levels, both were good so she's a bit baffled as to what's going on. She's sent me for anurgent chest X-ray and been referred to the breast clinic in two weeks time.

I will keep you up dated.

  • Im glad they have referred you for more tests to find out whats going on, I know its a stressful time going through stuff like this so I hope you are ok and dont forget we are here if you need any more support. Thank you, I hope all goes well for you Ali

  • Thank you, I'm trying not to dwell on something that might not be. Just need to get through the discomfort and hopefully find an answer. Fortunately I have two sons, husband and a busy job to keep me occupied.

  • Sounds very wise to me, I try my best to do the same in harder times. It's great that you have lots of lovely things to keep your mind off of it :) I'll look forward to hearing from you, will keep everything crossed for you and wish you the absolute best outcome :)

  • Hi, I am relieved  to say that after a mammogram, ultrasound and examination by the breast consultant both breasts are healthy.

Although I'm delighted by this news, I am still in a great deal of pain in the left chest, shoulder, neck and upper stomach area. I've had a chest x-ray,  bloods and ecg done but no-one seems to know what the problem is.

So I'm now at the point of limbo of what to do.

  • Hey, that’s great news! I’m so pleased to hear that :)) I bet you are so happy :) although the fact your still in a lot of pain must be difficult, there must be something going on somewhere bless you. Hopefully they will keep investigating until they get to the bottom of it? Have they said they’re going to do anything else?

  • Hi I'm back again and unfortunately I'm still in pain and have a constant swelling in my neck lymph node.

I went back to the dr as I couldn't take much more and not sleeping, he referred me for another chest X-ray,  X-ray of thoracic spine and full blood count with peripheral blood smear.

Thoracic came back with arthritis but chest and all blood tests came back normal, again although this is good news, it doesn't help what I'm going through at the moment. He's given me 2 weeks off work and I'm at the start of my second week.

My Dr is baffled as to what is going on and asked me to start from the beginning with all my symptoms.

I told him everything thats been happening over the past 3 months and showed him a picture of the swelling on left side of neck which he said he could clearly see. I also reported that the affected lymph nodes throb after I drink alcohol and if I bend over the node in the neck causes a uncomfortable pressure.

To get an expert opinion he has now referred me to a Hematologist but there is a 4 month wait. In the meantime I'm hoping I don't produce any more symptoms as I've already put my back out by just getting off the sofa.

I know the waiting can be the hard bit but trying to stay positive.

Any information of what to expect at the Hematologist appointment will be greatly appreciated.
