HPV positive but normal cell result

Hi all

I had my first smear in December 2018 since turning 25. Results came back as no abnormal cells but HPV positive. This was a shock as I didn’t even know what it was and the letter didn’t mention risk type or strain just said for me to go back for a smear in 12 months.

I phoned my gp and she said they only test for high risk so it is a high risk strain but she didn’t have info on what one... she told me not to worry but I can’t help it

I had the HPV jab in secondary school so I’m hoping that worked at preventing the 2 strains it is meant to!

Im concerned at how long I may have had HPV considering it’s my first smear and I’ve been sexually active for some time. I don’t have the best immune system and was recently on antibiotics for 2 months for strep throat which I think made my immune system even weaker during the winter months. I have also had a partner of 4 years and was worried about infidelaity but have been assured HPV can lay dormant for years.

My main worry is that a year is too long to wait but appreciate it takes the body a while to fight off. I suppose if it was serious I would have been called back for further tests but the internets information is extremely conflicting :(

The fact it’s sexually transmitted makes me feel so dirty. I have always been extremely careful.

  • Yes that's it isn't it like your kids depend on you so it's a lot scarier thinking the worst outcome. That's what my partner keeps saying like think positive cause I'm going to make myself really I'll. thank you so much you've made me ease abit I'll keep you updated once I've been and fingers crossed everything is ok. Is it painful when they laser it off btw just out of curiosity

  • Hi all

I was the original poster of this thread and just wanted to say Ive now had my second all clear smeer (3 years after the 12month one, following 1st HPV positive one)

I really believe my immune system at the time of my first smeer was so low due to months of antibiotics for strep throat that the dormant HPV showed up. As it was my first ever smeer I had no idea who I contracted it from but it is so common (almost like the coldsore virus) that it hardly matters

It appears HPV is still as unknown as it was back in 2018 which is a shame but please try to not worry, and just focus on improving your immune system - the main thing is to keep getting your smeer when required and do not miss any.

For anyone wondering about supplements I now use Vitl subscription service which has probiotics and other vitamins personalised to me. It's £25 a month and I was paying that just for probiotics before.

    lots of love x

  • Its not easy to not worry but worrying doesnt change anything so just gota keep thinking that

i was lucky enough to be put asleep while they did it so i didnt feel a thing and recovery didnt hurt at all ️

  • It is isn't I think it's normal to worry about these things. We wouldn't be human if we didn't.

oh that doesn't sound too bad then!, did you do anything for your body to clear the hpv as December will be my 3rd since getting it so hoping this one will be clear

  • I did tske some supplements that werent the cheapest but i read through extensive googling that it was good to rid hpv so i got them and it wents by coincidence or not i dont know

i dont have the names of them at the moment as im not home and i cant remember the name. I'd have to let you know tomorrow ️

  • Yeah I've read that multivitamin does help the chance brilliant thank you so much and I'm sorry if I done your heading by asking thousands of questions

  • Its ok, like i said i hate when people dont keep updated when people ask

  • Thank you so much I'll update you Wednesday when I've been and let you know how it goes ️ ️

  • Hi just thought I'd keep you updated.

so been for colposcopy today they have take a biopsie they can see small cell changes but don't think it's too much to worry about she thinks it's a grade 1 which I will go back in a year for another smear if it's higher then it will just be a smear in 6 months instead.

so quite pleased with the outcome as I'd been worrying about it for weeks.
