HPV positive but normal cell result

Hi all

I had my first smear in December 2018 since turning 25. Results came back as no abnormal cells but HPV positive. This was a shock as I didn’t even know what it was and the letter didn’t mention risk type or strain just said for me to go back for a smear in 12 months.

I phoned my gp and she said they only test for high risk so it is a high risk strain but she didn’t have info on what one... she told me not to worry but I can’t help it

I had the HPV jab in secondary school so I’m hoping that worked at preventing the 2 strains it is meant to!

Im concerned at how long I may have had HPV considering it’s my first smear and I’ve been sexually active for some time. I don’t have the best immune system and was recently on antibiotics for 2 months for strep throat which I think made my immune system even weaker during the winter months. I have also had a partner of 4 years and was worried about infidelaity but have been assured HPV can lay dormant for years.

My main worry is that a year is too long to wait but appreciate it takes the body a while to fight off. I suppose if it was serious I would have been called back for further tests but the internets information is extremely conflicting :(

The fact it’s sexually transmitted makes me feel so dirty. I have always been extremely careful.

  • Hi racla, I recently had my first smear test also around 2-3 weeks ago and it came back hpv positive no abonor

al cells which I had no idea what it was at the time and when I googled it I started to panic  as I haven't slept with anyone in 2 years and me and my boyfriend haven't slept with each other yet as we want to wait till we get married, I called my doctors straight away the next day and the nurse reassured me that it's very common and it's like having a cold your immune system has to fight it off but I have made a private appointment with a gynaecologist to double check everything and have a closer look and also just to talk about what it actually is and how I can get rid of it, I read that you took multivitamins and probiotics could I ask which ones you brought please as I would like to get them so I'm hoping in the next 6-12 months when I go for my next smear it will have gone by then x

  • Hi Jen!

oh I'm so sorry to hear you are in the same situation I was. The best thing I could tell you is try not to worry. The fact that you have no abnormal cells means that there is literally no chance of cancer developing - I also was worried that it would develop in the year waiting for the next smeer but I have learnt that it is a slow progressing cancer so that is also a very low chance.

I also learnt that the majority of my family and friends have had abnormal cells at some point which surprised me. Also HPV has only recently been something that they test for which is why I think I'd never heard of it. I read that 98% of cervical cancers originate from HPV so it's fairly likely that anyone who had abnormal cells also had HPV they just didn't test for it.

I was not well at the time I had been on antibiotics for nearly 3 months so my immune system was obviously shot. I then just focused on eating better, exercising more, trying to be less stressed in general as I am a worrier! With vitamins and probiotics I went for bioglan for women probiotics and centrum for women multivitamins. I think the probiotics really helped as I haven't had a cold since still to this day and I used to fall ill very often. I think anything you can do to assist your immune system will help your body fight off the virus.

I hope you feel better about it all soon. You will end up not thinking about it so often just initially it's very scary as it's all totally new information that you just don't hear about ! I felt like I had a STI and felt dirty but 4/5 people in their lifetime will get it and the majority will never know they have it so it is practically a part of life.

  • Hi everyone, had my 2nd smear today the nurse said I'll get my results within 2-3 weeks I'm just hoping & praying that I get the all clear my previous smear was hpv no abnormal cells which was good but hopefully I get the all clear I'm just trying my hardest to stay positive x

  • HPV positive result but no abnormal cells what does this mean so worried

  • Hi Jadiie

HPV is a virus which most people who are sexually active will have come into contact with as it’s spread by skin skin genital contact. It can cause changes to the cells of the cervix, which make them abnormal, but that hasn’t happened in your case which is great news!

You will be seen in a year, usually, for another smear test to see if the HPV is still present. Careful monitoring like this ensures that if there are any changes to the cells in the future they are picked up quickly. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

  • Thankyou very much for your help

  • Hi everyone,

So I also opened the dreaded letter yesterday and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw 'HPV positive' - I didn't even know what it was! So I Googled it and can't believe I have an STI, especially one which could have such serious consequences. I've cried my eyes out, not slept and just feel like totally giving up.

I called my GP about it today for reassurance and she was so uninterested and didn't help in the slightest.

I missed the vaccine too and feel like this is all my fault, I should have had it.

Does anyone know if HPV does have a negative effect on your fertility? I am in absolute bits about this.

My first smear test in 2018 was fine but apparently they didn't test for HPV then, so now I'm wondering how long I have had it? I haven't been sexually active for 2 years which means my body hasn't got rid of it which panics me even more - does this mean I'm more likely to get abnormal cells or cancer??

Reading all your responses has made me feel better as I feel so alone - I don't even know anyone who has had a smear test, never mind HPV positive. I feel so alone and hopeless, terrified and so stupid for not knowing about this and not having the vaccine. I have always been so careful and really can't believe this. I don't know if I can wait another year to find out, I feel like my life is over.

Hope we are all ok xx

  • Oh Minska, please please dont feel like this, i completely know how you feel, and felt dreadful when I found out i was hpv pos last year, but its VERY common, and people you know will have had it or have it and just dont know. It took me a good 3 months to get my head  around it, didn't wany my husband near me as i just felt awful, such a strange feeling. But you will feel better about the whole thing, i promise. I went for my yearly smear today after finding out last year I was hpv pos but no abnormal cells, the next few weeks waiting for the results are not going to be nice, but I have take comfort in the fact that no abnormal cells were found last year. The nurse was very reassuring and said most people's clear up in a year (even tho ive read it take 2 years on a lot of sites) but she made me feel better telling me its a really really common thing to have. This site has been great, I also called the helpline as my doctor was just rubbish and had no time for my worries, the lady I spoke to on the helpline was fantastic, I strongly recommend. You willl be ok, dont feel that your alone with this, there's a lot of us out there!! Take care xxxxx

  • I had the result back a couple of weeks ago, I have been with my husband 15 years and only ever had unprotected sex with him. I havnt been able to act the same around him since, it's brought up the question of him being unfaithful but after hours of reading suggests it can lie dormant for many years. I'm 31 and didn't have a clue what it was... like many of you I feel dirty and disgusting, never in my life expected to to have STI.

I'm going to start taking probiotics and multi vitamins after reading the thread, I'm also thinking of doing a private test after 6 months, has anyone else done this? I havnt told anyone other than my husband, I just feel so ashamed.

  • sorry can I ask what your taking is it to help boost your immune system

    sea moss

    pro biotics

started eating healthy and exercising xx
