HPV positive but normal cell result

Hi all

I had my first smear in December 2018 since turning 25. Results came back as no abnormal cells but HPV positive. This was a shock as I didn’t even know what it was and the letter didn’t mention risk type or strain just said for me to go back for a smear in 12 months.

I phoned my gp and she said they only test for high risk so it is a high risk strain but she didn’t have info on what one... she told me not to worry but I can’t help it

I had the HPV jab in secondary school so I’m hoping that worked at preventing the 2 strains it is meant to!

Im concerned at how long I may have had HPV considering it’s my first smear and I’ve been sexually active for some time. I don’t have the best immune system and was recently on antibiotics for 2 months for strep throat which I think made my immune system even weaker during the winter months. I have also had a partner of 4 years and was worried about infidelaity but have been assured HPV can lay dormant for years.

My main worry is that a year is too long to wait but appreciate it takes the body a while to fight off. I suppose if it was serious I would have been called back for further tests but the internets information is extremely conflicting :(

The fact it’s sexually transmitted makes me feel so dirty. I have always been extremely careful.

  • Hi racla

Hi completely understand your confusion. I’ve had my results back this morning and also had no abnormal cells but positive HPV. And my letter also didn’t explain much just like yours to go back in 12 months for my smear. I’m goin out of my mind with worry have you had any updates lovely.

    Thanks. Chelsea x

  • Hi Girls. My first smear to.I'm the exact same. No abnormal cells but I've got HPV and I need to book another smear in a year's time. Have any of your had any updates?

  • Hey hun just replying because I have had the same news today with my results I have been in such a Panic! I am thinking of making an appointment with my nurse for reassurance because I never got that in my results letter.. Have you heard anything since? I hope your feeling better about it xx
  • Hi Charlotte. Mine said there's nothing to worry about as long as no cells were detected then off I went :) all though  3 days after I went to the GP it must og sped up my refearal to the gyno I've been waiting on for over 6 months

  • I had a  positive HPV result in March  2020 and just had my second positive HPV result. Letter arrived this monring. I am 59 and won't deny a bit concerned. I am waiting for a nurse to ring me back . Apparently if I  get a third HPV positive result then I will get treatment . What, I do not know. I am just sitting here in tears.

  • I have just had a positive hpv result aswell. Its worrying me so much. Can anyone recommend anything to do to help as I'm going out of my mind with worry. Keep us updated with what happens charlotteholly 10. Hope u get the news u want. Its so scary.

  • Hi,

I know how you feel, i found out i got a hpv positive result last march, and just found out im still hpv positive. I have to have another one next year and if still positive need a colposcopy.

Have you got any cell changes? I haven't at the moment but it's horrible knowing i could have next year.

Happy to chat if you have any worries or need anyone to talk to

  • Thank you for your message back.its such a scary thing to go through and its reassuring to know that other people go through it aswell. I've got a really bad pain in my back now so not sure if that's related or just a water infection as I keep going a wee alot. How have u been keeping healthy. Have u changed anything xxx

  • It could be a urine infection especially if you are weeing a lot. To be honest I was so upset when I first found out last year, I felt dirty and ashamed but then I was trying to look on the positive side and think at least it was being monitored and there were no abnormal cells. It is so common. I just tried not to worry and didn't really change anything. I've still got it a year later I'm just hoping this time next year it's gone as I read it can take a couple of years to clear itself. Have you changed anything? X

  • Fingers crossed it is but I can't help thinking the worse and giggling my symptoms which I know I shouldn't but I can't help it. I feel so upset aswell. Its so hard to try and relax and carry on. I'm glad we can talk about the same things. I hope it clears for u. I read it can take up to two years to clear aswell. I haven't changed anything apart from taking vitamins xx

  • Yeah I know I was like that last year as I think it's easier to think the worst than it is to thing of the positives. It's so common and they didn't even used to test for HPV so we wouldn't even know we had it at the moment as our cells are still normal so I guess it's good they now test for it. I hope it clears for you too I'm Gona start taking vitamins or probiotics too xx

  • Yeah I know how u feel. Its so scary but hopefully we can all make each other feel better.

  • Thank you . It does help knowing other people are going through the same thing. I am not very good at sharing info with family members because everyone looks to me to sort their problems out.

  • Hi all

I'm 25 and was diagnosed HPV positive with no abnormal cells 3 days ago. Ever since I have been spending the majority of my time researching as had no idea what it was. Me and my boyfriend broke up two months ago and I'm in two minds about telling him / future partners. My doctor said I didn't need to but I think I'd feel deceptive if I didn't. I'm oversharing, but not having him in my life has made this feel so much worse and I just feel like no one else will want me now.

One minute I feel fine about it as it is so common, the next I feel so anxious and fearful for what is potentially to come.

It would be great to hear how other people have dealt with their diagnosis.

    xx

  • Hi everyone,

I had this same result yesterday and have been so anxious, I feel so disgusting even though it is so common, this forum has definitely helped reassure me.

I can completely relate, one minute I'm fine and the next I freak out. It's the prospect of what could potentially happen and the fact that you just have to wait a year.

I think it's a case of looking after ourselves, trying not to stress as it can compromise the immune system ( easier said than done) and talking to others that have been through the same.

It is nice to see that I'm not alone in how I feel!

  • I'm in such a similar situation to you.

My and my boyfriend of 5 years broke up a couple months ago.

Was wondering how you then dealt with your diagnosis?

  • Hi ladies

So it's been just over a week since my diagnosis and I’m feeling much better. It’s a shock to begin with of course but honestly it gets better and you adjust to the news. I’ve done a hell of a lot of reading up about HPV and it’s not as bad as that dreaded diagnosis feels. I'm no longer obsessively reading up about it - thank God!

I’m actually feeling very positive about life - taking vitamins (women's probiotics and women's Centrum), am exercising regularly and haven’t had a cigarette since I got my results (this is a feat for me haha). I've even booked a trek to Everest base camp - something I've been meaning to do for a long time! This super common virus has given me the kick up my *** I need to really start living.

Easier said than done but there’s really no point in stressing over it for a year. If the next smear shows irregular cells then I’ve accepted that this may lead to unpleasant procedures, BUT it’s not got to that point yet. It’s great that we’re being monitored and the chances of us getting cancer are so slim because abnormalities will be removed before this can happen. This is the beauty of regular smears!

In terms of my ex, I haven’t told him. I might tell future partners but I’m not going to stress about it right now and will cross that bridge when it comes to it. I’ve only told my sister and best friend because people don’t need to know. It’s a hugely common virus and our bodies will very likely get rid of it before it can harm us.

Hope this helps! Look after yourselves and your body will hopefully kick that unwanted guest out xx

  • P.S. Don't waste your time feeling disgusting because you're not, AT ALL. I got over that feeling pretty quickly and now I just feel like regular me again. Sending lots of love x

  • Hi

I feel the same as you like you said one minute you feel ok the next I'm breaking down! It me just such a hard thing to deal with because chances are we will get rid of this and carry on as normal but then you look on google and completely scare yourself

staying focused is so important but I totally agree with you this chat helps knowning other woman are in the same boat and it's not as unnormal as u think

    xx

  • Hi everyone,

I got also this scary results letter from the smear test I had back in March stating that I am high risk HPV positive but no changes in the cells. I have to make an appointment in a years time as well. No idea about the strains though NHS probably thought that a few words only and an utterly useless booklet would do the job I guess.

I'm extremely scared I didn't know what hpv was really even though I had the vaccine for it when I was like 12 years old (I knew it as cervix cancer vaccine) . I called my mum terrified and she wasn't sure what it was either, only that it is an STD.

I'm in a relationship 3 years now and we stay together. We think that we might know where I got it from because before covid we had a bit of you know "sinful adventure" (I'm so so unlucky cause it was the first time I did something similar even though we were protected and asked for negative STDs test before. But I just found out that hpv cannot be tested in men anyway.) I developed a pain during sex 4 months after and on until today. Even though the last couple of weeks I feel a bit better, I have some bleeding after sex as well as green-yellow discharge.

I went for vagina check last week cause of the above issues before I knew about the hpv and the doctor told me that everything is close to perfect down there, no wounds no scratches or warts. Can it be faulty positive at all? I have been wondering while crossing fingers.

My immune system is also rubbish since last May as I had to be hospitalised a couple of times (and shield for covid because of that). I am absolutely terrified and on top of that I got the astra vaccine before it was banned for under 30s and my anxiety makes me worry now for 2 things as one wasn't enough I am literally going mad.

I also really want kids in the future and just the thought of being infertile because of hpv, cold sweat just covers me. I keep on thinking how can I be so stupid and do such stupid mistakes. I know i might overreact but I don't know what else to do it seems like I'm going from one illness to the next. Untill yesterday I have been stressed about the vaccine now i'm also stressed about the hpv, I feel like I'm gonna burst.

I have been suffering with anxiety for years now and this situation doesn't make It easier at all. I also got a huge meltdown last May followed by some extremly stressful events which probably caused the problem that I had to be hospitalised for. Can't stop but thinking that maybe that was the moment the virus got active.

It was good to read this thread though, it did make me feel better and I thought I might write my story as well and get some answers or even comfort (which is quite hard to find these days).

Finishing my long drama, does anybody know what my boyfriend has to do about hpv? He probably has it because I have it but there is no test that can detect it (or so I am reading) on him so how can he be cleared from it as well and not keep on infecting each other? I am going to ask the GP on Monday as well but it seems like there is very little information (and empathy) from gps about gynecological issues which makes me so so frustrated. Thank you for reading this though I needed to tell someone about all this cause I have been searching the Web for answers like mad.

    Xx

    Stay safe!

  • Hi

I'm also feeling really rubbish and anxious I have also had my results and it's positive for HPV I feel so disgusting even though we shouldn't so u need to put that bit to the back of your mind.. I didn't no much about this virus and to be honest I still don't I have spent the last 2 nights scrolling through googling crying myself to sleep.. it's not good as we need to keep focused and remember this could clear up and if you have a read through the chats girls have had this and had the all clear a year or so later.. I have a partner who I have been with for many years and I felt so disgusting he even rang his doctors but like you said there is no test for men it's just a case of there immune system to clear it.. it's a hard one because u hear one thing then other things contradict it like I'm so worried to but I have to wait a year and I can't go a year feeling like this also I haven't had the hpv vaccine either so I'm more scared now xxx
