Suspicious Thyroid nodule.

Last year I was having trouble swallowing and i felt as though someone had there hand resting on my throat, after a little feel around I found a lump. So iI wen to the doctor who felt the lump and  who referred me to ENT the appointment took about 10 weeks. ENT put a camera down my nose and decided that it was reflux that was causing my swallowing problems. He loosley felt round my neck and told me I had no lump. Told me to double my omeprozole to 40mg and tried to rush me out that door. Before he could o asked again about the lump, again he told me it wasn't there but to put my mind at rest referred me for a US. My friend who was there at the time took the doctors word and again told me it was in my head as the doctor had said so.

Walking into the US scan 6 weeks later I felt stupid especially as he had written to my doctor to tell him there was no lump. When I went in she explained what she was going to do and I explained that I thought there was a lump but the ent was very sure I wasnt feeling any abnormalities.  The women were great they talked me through everything as I need to know these things. At the end of the scan, she told me that I did indeed have a thyroid lump.

Fastforward another 4 weeks I phoned to ask if I had results yet. She told me it had just been checked and that the lump was suspicious and they couldn't tell from the US what it was. That the ENT doctor had asked me to get a FNA with US guide. I have this appointment tomorrow and I am so nervous.

Can anyone answer these questions

1. Do they numb the area

2. Is it painful

3. How long will the results take?

Any advice would be great

  • As this is your first post with us I just wanted to pop in to give you a warm welcome to Cancer Chat, Catlady69.

What a stressful situation you find yourself in, no wonder you're so nervous but I'm glad to hear that you have taken the most important step which is to have yourself checked.

You mentioned you had an appointment yesterday so I wanted to ask how did it go? Hopefully you got all the answers to your questions and the news were nothing sinister.

Once you find a moment, come back and let us know how you're getting on. We're thinking of you.

    All the best,

  • Finally got my results yesterday. It was follicular thyroid cancer. They might have to cut the other side out as there were breaks in the cancer cells and he explained they're is a chance the cancer could have spread through the veins in the thyroid. Then he explained about a radiotherapy pill thing. Got a nice discriptive booklet on the whole process though.

Not sure how I feel or how I am meant to feel. Yes it's cancer but it's out, it's daunting that I may need surgery again as it flared all my other illnesses and the pill sounds awful and I don't know how to be in isolation when I am a single mum with 2 kids and 4 cats . Friends and family have reacted in different ways some totally fine because of the surgery I have already had others worrying the worst and researching well "googling" then phoning me. Although one thing I feel about everyone is that I don't seem to be allowed to talk about certain things the ones who are dismissive I can't mention much, I mentioned help I could get from Maggie's and was met with 'but you don't have it anymore' and on the opposite end I don't bring it up or talk as little with the ones who are looking into all the worst outcomes.

I feel weird. A bit numb. I think the "C" word brings that kind of shock and fear anyway. I am glad the main bit is out but fear for what's maybe going to come in the way of surgery and therapy. Although I now understand my dad's calm quietness when he was diagnosed and my friends and grans. It's not that they were fine with it, it's that there is no prescribed "feeling" for that word. Maybe the main word is simply 'acceptance' x

  • Hi, just been reading up on your post. How are you now, how are you feeling. Did you have to have the other half of your thyroid removed ? I'm been constantly stuck on Google, researching and searching up on suspicious thyroid nodules. I felt a lump in my neck mid August, doctors sent me for a scan at the hospital beginning of Sept. So I have a benign nodule in my left side of the thyroid and a suspicious nodule in my right, no other tests were done and I've been in a mess since that day. Well I'm due to go back Monday for another scan to see if there's been any change to the suspicious nodule . Just wondered what your process was, as I feel a bit lost with it all and no one to talk to about it.

    Thanks
