Possible early signs of lung cancer?

Afternoon all,

My mum has just had a scary phone call from the dcotors regarding something they have found on the left lung after her recent x-ray.

She has always suffered with illnesses (coughs, flu, etc) she seems to get these symtoms year in and year out, currenlty she has pleurisy (had it twice now), which was diagonosed a few weeks back, these sytoms can only be helped with the use of steriods and anti-biotics. She had an x-ray (few weeks ago) Dr on the ward said everything looked ok, until the radiologist looked a bit further, he found two lumps, shadows (sorry not sure what they will be called) on the left lung, one at the top and one at the bottom, with lengths of 3.5cm and 2.5cm. whether its protocol or not, but the GP which asked my mum to come basically said 'its cancer until proven otherwise' as you can imagine this was a massive shock to us both.

She previoulsy had an x-ray (Jan 2018) and nothing showed up after examination, recently she had blood tests, ecg etc and all came back within range, all ok, she isnt loosing weight, not passing blood and no persistent cough either.

Main thing why I'm posting this is simply for piece of mind, could this be cancer? does this sound like something else with the illnesses shes had recently? I completely understand that the GP had to be very tight lipped on the situation, he couldnt really give us any advice until shes had her CT scan within the next couple of weeks...

Just a thought though, if this was cancer, would this mean its in the very early stages of it, purely becasue she had an xray in Jan 2018 which showed ok?

I'm just very worried thats all, and any advice would be much appreciated...

Kind Regards,

P

  • Hello there,

I bet you are very worried which in my opinion is most understandable.

I had a Carcinoid tumour in my lung a couple of years ago.  At 38 it wasn't exactly what I was expecting.  I had repeated pneumonia so went to my terrible doctor a tonne of times before he eventually took my pleas seriously and sent me for an x ray.  Whilst in and out of appointments, before I was diagnosed, one of the things I learnt was that infections leave a mark on your lungs.   Something as simple as the common cold apparently.  For up to about 6 weeks after you are better.  So, as mum has been poorly recently it could be something as simple as that.  The good thing is that your mum's doctor has reacted and got her in and I dare say more tests to follow before you actually find the answers you look for.  But my personal experience of the NHS (post GP involvement) is very positive. I'm sure she'll be well looked after.

It's damn hard but try and stay positive.

My thoughts are with you and your mum x
