Does ruptured breast implant give constant severe pain?

Hi this is my first post. I found a small lump in my armpit about a year ago painless so left it . Six months later started getting intermittent awful pain in my shoulder blade and down arm.

Past 3 months the pain is pretty much constant nothing helps so I deal with it. My doctor sent me for mammogram last month. The consultant said I have ruptured breast implant that caused enlarged lymph nodes in armpits so sent mri. He wasn’t interested in any pain said I am a breast consultant was quite cheeky actually.

Had mri yesterday was 40 minutes in machine they stopped part way through to move me so they could get more area.

I have googled and all pain symptoms and lymph node enlargement say Pancoast tumour. It definitely is a nerve pain all on one side. Can silicone cause this ?

  • Hello traceyyyy,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It sounds like you have been experiencing excruciating pain poor you and I hope you get to the bottom of this very soon. Hopefully it won't be long before you get the results of your MRI scan. I know it is really hard and we all do it but try not to google too much as it will only make you worry more. It would be good if you could talk to a doctor or a specialist about all this and ask whether the silicone could have caused this. Perhaps ask to speak to a different consultant so that your concerns are taken seriously and you get the answers you need.

Keeping everything crossed for you for good results. Let us know what you find out and if you have managed to speak to a doctor or an implant specialist.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Tracey

    I hope you are well.

i too am currently going through all this at the moment.
I just wondered how you were and what the outcome of your mri was?

I origionally went to doctors over a year ago with a and shoulder pain, and pain in my elbow, which is now also in my arm. I had four cortisone injections over the period of a year and finally got referred to a consultant at the middle of September. I had an mri for my shoulder that came back but he was more concerned about my lymph nodes in my armpit that showed up on the mri. He sent me to the breast clinic Tuesday just gone. I had a mammogram and an ultrasound to which I was told my implant had ruptured and it was silicone in my lymph nodes. I don't know how many and the consultant I saw was so blasay about it all. Is leaving 5 weeks before he's taking it out. He has not done an mri which I won't settle until I've had one. I'm back seeing my gp on Thursday and I'm not leaving until it's requested.

i was reading your post and looked up what you said and now it's got me going because of some of my symptoms.

I hope you are well and it was nothing sinister.

  • I would love to know how you both have got on. I have had my implants since 1998 and had them replaced in 2008. In 2014 i had a scab on my right nipple which i went to the docs with and after mammogram and ultra sound and visit to breast surgeon and dermatologist give all clear. Then 2 years ago I had a lump in my armpit and I went to doc again and she sent me back. I had another mammogram and ultrasound and was again told nothing there but silicone in a lymph node. I said is it def not cancer they said no, not cancer. I was so happy I just left happy.  I had a medical last year and mentioned that I still have pain sporadically in that armpit and the doctor examined me but wasn't concerned overly but said I should see a plastic surgeon if I was concerned.  I am concerned, but I lost my mum to ovarian cancer in September so I have been burying my fear of what it might be which I know is just plain dumb. I am at the point of thinking I'd rather just leave it and deal with it later and if it's breast cancer I will just let it run it's course because I can't face going through what my mum did. She was stage 4 at diagnosis and lasted 2 and a half years. And they were 2 and a half horrible years for her and the family.  I don't want to put my family through that. :(

so i made the mistake of googling it as the pain is back but again it's sporadic and as I am 51 I get hormonal pain and it always coincides with the armpit pain.  I have to say as well, that I am a right baby,  I hate being examined, it makes me cringe when they poke my armpit as it's tender and I just can't face it again.  I know that's stupid but it's a fact

Anyway, my point is that I'm now wondering if that first mammogram ruptured my implant and the silicone is from that. I mean they are 12 years old and they are silicone. Either way, I know what I have to do... I just wondered what the outcome of the other posts were.  Thanks for listening xxx
