Blood/mucus stool

Hi

For tge past 8 months ive had blood and mucus in stools, i went to the docs and they said IBS, tge symptoms persisted so i went back, they took blood tests which were all normal, a stool test which said i had high calproctin levels (1200) so gp said i had suspected IBD, i have a colonoscopy appt in 2 weeks. Obviously no one can diagnose other than the docs after colonoscopy but im freaking out and expecting the worst! Has anyone else had anything similar? I have absolutely so other symptoms just mucus at rhe top of stool (first bit to come out) then blood on the outside sometimes quite a bit sometimes barely any and thats it but it has been every stool apart from maybe 5 in total for the last 8 months! Maybe a slight niggle in left lower side of stomach occasionally right but nothing major at all.

No family history, no weight loss, no tiredness, bowel habbits normal, no pain, no other symptoms, just an increase in anxiety!

Thanks for reading

  • Thank you so much for replying. I get quite nautilus and feel twinges of pain under my ribs as well as stomach I'm trying to be positive but I'm afraid it is getting too much. What kind of diet is that and what do you eat. I'll try anything at the moment

  • Thank you for answering what do yo7 eat on this diet.I'm really worried and I guess that doesn't help.

  • Hi all

I've had similar symptoms to this now for a few weeks. I'm 28.

Started about 2 weeks ago, saw blood when wiping and on outside of stool. Then smaller traces the next morning but nothing after that for about a week. Then the past week every time I have saw blood (bar Sunday afternoon). Bowel movements have been painless and haven't gone up or down in frequency. No weight loss or fatigue. Most times have seen mucus too. Went the doctors on Monday, they felt around abdomin area for lumps/pain but luckily nothing there. Also had digital (finger) rectal exam which took a few seconds - couldn't feel anything but blood on finger when removed. Said it was likely to be something like haemorrhoids or a fissure but forwarded me on for a further exam so I'm waiting to hear from that. Also submitted stool sample and blood sample on Tuesday so waiting to hear from that.

No family history of any bowel cancer, polyps or any IBD.

I'm really scared. Still seeing blood and mucus when I go the toilet (about the same amount) which I know would still be happening if it's haemorrhoids or a fissure, but the waiting and having my health out of my hands is tough. Struggling to focus at work or on anything else when I'm not working.

Reading the posts on here has helped a bit, as it seems nobody was diagnosed with Cancer, but until I hear back, I'm not sure I'll be able to relax.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated. And good luck to anyone else waiting on results.

  • I had my scan yesterday and they couldn't see anything. I can have a colonoscopy this week. I was told it could be a parasite or the amount of stress due to my dad dying of covid that has elevated the situation. I only have mucus in stool now so they said it was a fissure or something . It's been going on for  a month but blood has gone. I'm trying to be positive and am undecided about the colonoscopy. I know how you are feeling. Don't worry you can always chat to me if it makes you feel better. Together we will support each other.

  • Thanks so much for your response.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. I can't imagine how I'd be coping under the same circumstances.

It's good news that your scan showed nothing. And I'd be feeling the same about a colonoscopy. Ultimately, I'd probably just ask the doctor what they thought I should do and go with that. May be uncomfortable for a bit but that'll be temporary. It may allow them to confirm it as a fissure which would be a relief.

I'm finding it hard not to read something into every little thing at the minute. Feel like I've had more gas lately but that's likely a result of me eating more fresh fruit and veg to get more fibre in my diet. Last few bowel movements have been more runny -  but I'm constantly nervous/have butterflies in my stomach, so it's probably down to that. I've been on Google probably a couple of times a day, but that's mostly helped as i tend to just keep re-reading the facts about how likely it is to be something minor due to my age and symptoms and everything else. Reminding myself that my doctor also said it's probably nothing serious is also helping.

Here to talk if you need anything. I'd say again- it's a huge positive that they've not found anything serious from the scan!

  • Thank you so much, I needed the positive support. You are right a little discomfort is worth it if they can reassure me there is nothing wrong. I will be here if you need to chat and between us we will get through this. I have stopped looking up possible reasons for my problem now. It sends me mad. It will be over as soon as possible so I think I will have to brave it. Thank you for your support and for saying about dad. It's been a very tough year for so many people x

  • Thanks. I'm here too if you need to chat.

I'm not actually sure what the best case scenario I can hope for from the stool and blood sample results are. Whether they can rule out the serious stuff altogether or whether it just allows them to say the serious illnesses are more/less likely? Would be a huge weight off if they could rule out the serious stuff. Not sure when I'll hear as I only submitted my samples on Tuesday.

  • Mine took four days . They didn't do parasite test though. Everything  came back clear except the parasite test as they didn't do it. They have fast tracked the other tests because they know I'm nervous and I want reassuring. Don't worry. I had the same symptoms as you and bloods and stool came back clear. They just want to check why I'm naucious too and in pain when I eat. Because yo7 are not losing weight and have no pain that's a great sign xx

  • Thanks, I do feel a bit better now!

  • You are welcome. Please let me know how you get on. I'm here if you need to chat x
