Flexible sigmoidoscopy tests

hi all,

just looking to get some extra info/advice from others who may have been in the same situation....

i went to my gp with rectal bleeding and changes in stool (sorry but very much like cow pat). Bleeding did tend to be on toilet paper on wiping. I also get a watery type discharge around anus which can itch like crazy!!

GP brushed me off initially so went to a consultant who recommended I get a faecal calprotectin stool test aswell as a flexible sigmoidoscopy. During my 30 min appt she put a proctoscopy up there (oh my did that hurt!!!)

Sigmoidoscopy came back normal and stool test which looked for inflammation also came back normal. My GP has ‘diagnosed’ me with internal piles and IBS.

should I be concerned that the whole colon was not examined? I really don’t know much about this, only from google searches (not the best idea) so any extra info would be great.

peace & love.

  • You are making a difference, I can assure you. There are so many wonderful people on here that respond, but I notice some threads where no one has replied, you replied to my post so quickly.

Moviprep tomorrow, I'm dreading it, I have an awful gag reflex for bad smells, never mind bad tastes. I've bought some double concentrate, sugar free, orange squash, plan to make it really strong with the squash, so hopefully that's all I'll taste.

  • Actually despite what I've read online, Moviprep isn't that bad, not the salty taste that people refer to. I thought it was going to be thick like Lactulose, but its not. I'm on the 2nd dose now, my godness it has been EFFECTIVE ;)

The only issue with it is the amount, my body doesn't want any more liquid, I haven't drunk the litre of water I was meant to have between the Moviprep, I figured drinking the Moviprep was the more important of the two.

16 hours and hopefully this will all be over with

  • Hi Grillz,

Try to drink 250ml of water. You want what comes out of the other end to look relatively clear with a yellow tinge. I found the sugary taste so sickly.

All the best for tomorrow - remember to write down any questions so you can get answers and move on from this tomorrow.

    Let us know.

  • Thanks Callum,

    I'll update tomorrow.

  • Good News

Whilst they dont know whats causing the mucus, they can tell me its nothing sinister, I'm so relieved. I did have one little hemmeroid, but thats not causing it. It probably some type of IBS. The actual exam was a breeze.

So glad its over, thank you so much for all your messages, its really helped to talk to someone who has been through it.

    Grillz xx

  • Thanks for the information been a little worried about having my procedure (tomorrow) and there's little info on how the procedure is from the patients side of things online. After reading this I feel alot less apprensive and I think I'll opt not to have the sedation as sounds like it's not needed. Very much appreciate the two of you sharing your experiences.

  • Hi acb, I hope the procedure went well, I'm glad this post helped.
