Vaginal cancer

Hi

Has anyone had any experience of vaginal cancer? I had a biopsy taken yesterday and the consultant said it could be cancer. I'm very scared and would like to hear from anyone who has been through it.

Thanks

  • Hi Caroline,

I saw you were looking to hear from others who have had vaginal cancer so I just wanted to put you in touch with [@Umbrella]‍. You can find out more about them here but hopefully they will pop by when they can for a quick chat now I've mentioned them in this post.

Fingers crossed the biopsy does not confirm the consultant's suspicions.

    Kind regards,

  • Hey Caroline

I have stage 3 vulva and vaginal cancer. I am x5 weeks post op. I had a vulvectomy on 17th September. Atm the cancer was successfully removed in surgery so I don't need other treatments for this fight at least. So for now, I'm just recovering. X5 more weeks left of recovery n I'm hoping it's way easier than now by then. What treatment have they said for you hun?

If you don't mind me asking what symptoms do you have? What made you go Dr's?

Its different for each person see hun, we all have our own set of symptoms. Your lucky your Dr knew what he was looking at, not 1 of my Dr's have seen vulva cancer...EVER!!!

They tell you, its a cancer that can and probably will, return at some point in your life. You've just got to make sure you report any itch, spot, whatever you're symptoms are.

Sorry hun, I don't wanna scare you even more than you are, until I know your story n you know mine at least. I had a lot of lesions on my vulva and my vaginal passage, so my treatment n recovery has been.. . very complicated. I'll just say that for now, if you do want to talk to me then I'll share my story/journey so far.

Hope to talk again soon, look after yourself hun, good luck

    Ps

BTW I'm 37yrs young. Vulva cancer usually only affects women over 60!! I'm the youngest I've spoke to so far... Depressing it's such a rare cancer I've only managed to find 3 other women with vulva cancer anyway. How young are you hun, if you don't mind me asking. I live in Staffordshire too. X

  • Hi Steph

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm still waiting for my biopsy results so still feeling hopeful, well a bit!

I'll post again when I've got the results.

  • Hi Jenni

Thank you so much for your reply. It's so nice to be able to talk to someone who's going through it too. I'm still waiting for my biopsy results from Monday so still feeling a little hopeful it's not cancer, but I'm not convinced. How long did you wait for your results? Both my gp and consultant said they'd never seen it before, and I've heard vaginal cancer is very rare, so I've put 2 and 2 together. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Mine was spotted by my nurse when she did my routine smear. It was so painful and she said it didn't look right so made me see my gp. My gp then sent me for an urgent referral as she had never seen anything like it either. In hindsight I do have other symptoms but I wouldn't have bothered seeing the doc about them, I just thought maybe the menopause was coming! I get period like pains a lot, spotting and discharge (tmi) and sex is quite uncomfortable. Can I ask what your symptoms were and what made you see your gp?

I'm 45, so you're still the youngest!! Lol.

I'm so glad to hear you're on the mend, what you've been through sounds horrific. I can't even begin to imagine what a vulvectomy involves.

Just one more thing, did you ever have trouble saying "vaginal cancer"? I find it really awkward to say it!! A couple of my friends have said "You mean cervical cancer?" and I've had to correct them. I guess it's just because it's so rare people don't talk about it.

Anyway, thanks again for popping up on here, I REALLY appreciate it. I hope your recovery goes well and you're feeling much better soon.

  • Hi Caroline,

I know this is old, but wondering how your diagnosis turned out? I have a suspicious, painful spot in my vagina, along with newly diagnosed complex ovarian cyst and fibroids that could be from endometriosis. My main symptoms started from my ovaries, but recently the sore spot appeared. I am only 33, so I'm hoping it is just a cyst, but have an appt. scheduled to get it checked out in a few weeks.

I am nervous since there's not much info out there about it, and I do have quite a few cancerous symptoms in general, especially ovarian cancer and 90% of the vaginal cancer symptoms. Of course, those symptoms could all be from other things which is what makes this so hard. Most doctors seem to think there's no way I have cancer because I'm so young, and I feel like they aren't listening to me when I say I have all of these new and worsening symptoms. No doc yet has asked for specifics of my symptoms, they just smile and say "I definitely don't think you have cancer." (This has happened 3 times now)

I have made a typed out list to hand to the next doc I see, because I am sick of feeling like I can never list off all of my symptoms in a 10-15 minute meeting. Plus I am recovering from multiple pulmonary embolisms (also a symptom of cancer) so that is generally what takes up my time now. But I definitely don't want to miss something if I'm having all of these symptoms along with multiple diagnosis that point to potential cancer symptoms. Anyways, hope you wound up getting good news!!!

  • Is this an active post? I'd love to hear how you all are, I'm having some worrying symptoms x
