Breast total duct excision

Back in June I started having bleeding from my nipple and found a lump in my breast, my go quickly referred me to the breast clinic where they did a ultrasound on the lump and I was examined by a specialist nurse. They were happy the lump was just glandular tissue and sent me merrily on my way .But then I was called 6 weeks later for review with a consultant. She announced that even though the lump is nothing to worry about, the discharge is concerning and she wants to do a total excision of all the ducts in that breast as this is the only way to find out what is causing the discharge/bleeding and as cancer is a possible cause it needed to be done to rule this out.  So I’m booked in for this in a few weeks. I’m really worried. About the procedure, the recovery, the scaring and the waiting for the results! I’m only 38 and really struggling to deal with my emotions at the minute. Finding myself very weepy. Has anyone else had this procedure?

  • I have breast duct incision on Thursday and was wondering about the recovery and how long I would be off work. Would be interested to hear from others who underwent the surgery

    Hi Minidoe,

Welcome to our forum. Recovery time depends on different factors such as, number of nodes removed, your age, health status, type of cancer. The person in the best position to advise you about this will be your surgeon, so why not ask him/her?

It took about 6 weeks for mine to heal, but that was only a first level clearance (6 nodes) and, all came back clear.

I shall be thinking of you on Thursday and hope that it all goes well.

Please keep in touch. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

I had the same thing, I have just had my operation Friday the 9th, all went well the operation took 45mins, I had a full left breast duct excision, I took pain killers on Friday evening when I got home and to be honest I have had little pain, I can move my arm, my boob did swell to twice it's size and bruised, but other then that it's been ok, I have another appointment in 2 weeks, I hope every thing goes ok for you too, take care.

  • Hi all, I've been reading up on this post as I'm sure to have an excision, probably start of 2021. I'm more concerned about going under than the results as it's my first general anaesthetic op ever, my worry is pain levels afterwards. I'm glad I have somewhere to read up on others' experience x

  • Hi Miss SM,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Pain levels post-op are all quite manageable. If you are in pain you will be given a preparation to control it. There is a worry with all anaesthetics, but your anaesthetist will take good care of you. You will aso have a pre-med prior to your surgery, so your care team will know if there are any likely problems beforehand.

Do please keep in touch. We are always here for you.

    Kindest regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi MissSM,

Have you had your excision? If so how did it go? I go in Wednesday next week for a total excision with a possibility of under arm node removal too (2/3 were enlarged on the scan). Im wondering what to expect? Hope all has gone well for you and results are clear x

  • Hi Mercy100

I ended up only having a single duct excision so was grateful for that although that doesn't help answer your question. I had minimal pain because of this but needed a few days off work, the anesthetic left me feeling dopey and tired. Im getting my dressing off and results tomorrow so everything is pointing towards thumbs up. The nurses were brilliant and told me to take my time before I left recovery. I wish you the very best for next week and for your results xx

    Hi Miss Sm,

I am so glad to hear that your surgery went well and, was less invasive than you expected. I hope that your results tomorrow are all good news.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Results today, what they removed was an intraductal papilloma so all good. The scarring is itchy and a little sore but otherwise good.

Thanks for the support on this thread, it's so helpful to know that there are other out there who you can share this experience with.
