Breast total duct excision

Back in June I started having bleeding from my nipple and found a lump in my breast, my go quickly referred me to the breast clinic where they did a ultrasound on the lump and I was examined by a specialist nurse. They were happy the lump was just glandular tissue and sent me merrily on my way .But then I was called 6 weeks later for review with a consultant. She announced that even though the lump is nothing to worry about, the discharge is concerning and she wants to do a total excision of all the ducts in that breast as this is the only way to find out what is causing the discharge/bleeding and as cancer is a possible cause it needed to be done to rule this out.  So I’m booked in for this in a few weeks. I’m really worried. About the procedure, the recovery, the scaring and the waiting for the results! I’m only 38 and really struggling to deal with my emotions at the minute. Finding myself very weepy. Has anyone else had this procedure?

  • I had major duct excision yesterday. I started to have a bloody discharge a month ago and was fast tracked to the breast clinic for tests. Mammogram and ultrasound were clear but surgeon said at my age (55) and a history of cancer (womb) he wasn't prepared to take any chances.
I had to stay in overnight. Home now and a bit sore but only taking paracetamol.

Did anyone posting on this thread have restrictions re arm movement?
The nurse advised not to lift my arms above my head for two weeks and gave me a certificate for 2 weeks off work.
worried sick about the results on the 11th November xxx

    Hi Daisee,

Welcome to our forum. I am glad to hear that you had a major duct excision yesterday and, that you are doing well post-operatively. With womb cancer, I am glad to hear that your surgeon has decided not to take any chances and has gone ahead with this surgery. However, it is good to hear that your mammogram and ultrasound were both clear.

I have had a lumpectony and 1st level lymph node clearance first time around. That was 10 yearsago. I had a second bout the following year and had a double mastectomy. I had definite restrictions in my arm movement particularly after the first operation. I perservered with my exercises and it eventually abated.

I sincerely hope that your results on 11th November are also clear.

Do please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi everyone .

I have recently had an ultrasound, biopsy and mammogram to determine why I kept having constant nipple discharge. The results thankfully came back negative but the surgeon wants me to have a duct excision . This is happening on wednesday this week . Can anyone tell me how they were afterwards ? Thanks in advance :)

    Hi Ashpat,

Welcome to our forum. I am glad to hear that your test results came back negative, but sorry to hear that you still need a total duct excision.

I have only had a first level duct excision, ie 6 lymph nodes, which were fortunately all clear. This was 10 years ago.  At the same time I had a lumpectomy. The following year I discovered another lump in the same breast and had a double mastectomy. Since then, I have always been slightly tender underarm and have a constant discomfort in my arm. Although I wish that this wasn't so, it is something that I can cope with.

I wouls suggest that you do your exercises religiously after surgery. I did this, but still ended up with bilateral Lymphoedema, which is still a problem today.

I sincerely hope that all goes well for you on Wednesday. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I shall be thinking of you on Wednesday and shall have my fingers crossed.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Sorry you are needing to have this procedure, i was worried before i had mine so understand how you are feeling. I was really fine after my procedure. The Ducal excision is quite a small procedure and after resting for a day or two i was ok. Just no heavy lifting or anything for a few weeks.  There was not much pain, no where near what i expected and my scaring is mimimal. I hope it goes well for you and the results are all clear.

  • Thanks for your reply . I have taken 5 days off work at the moment to see how I am . I think it's not knowing how sore I am going to be afterwards that's worrying me the most but reassuring to know that you were okay after it .

    Hi Littlestar,

I agree that the procdure was much less painful than I expected it to be, as was my lumpectomy and bilateral mastectomy. It's amazing just how much we can build the fear up when we give reign to our imagination!

I am glad to hear that you are healing well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Has anyone had pain months after having a total duct excision. I sometimes wake up in the morning and it’s painful. My op was last June.

    Hi Tak,

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer. The first was 10 years ago when I had a lumpectomy followed by Tamoxifen for 1 year. At this time, I had a first level lymph node clearance. I had a second bout in the same breast a year later and had a bilateral mastectomy followed by Letrozole. My surgeon tried to remove a small number of lymph nodes from my other side second time around, but only succeeded in getting fat.

I still have discomfort under the original arm, where 6 nodes were removed, but the other side doesn't give me any bother at all. I hope that your pain settles soon.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Tak,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear that you still have pain after your total duct excision.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer 9 and 10 years ago and, had a first level clearance of my lymph nodes the first time. My surgeon tried to take just one or 2 the second time, but only got fat. Strangely, I have a constant discomfort from my first clearance, but none from the second.

I hope that yours settles down soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
